Blushing Hostess

It's 7 am and I'm HUNGRY!
I wake up STARVING every day.
Kevin totally doesn't get it. He can wait 'til lunch time to eat- and yes, he knows that's not good for him, so he'll usually forces himself to eat something.
I just wish I had that kind of appetite control. Food is just SO good,
and Julia Child was so right, "with enough butter, anything is good". Mmmm butter. Speaking of mouth-watering, I read a great blog called the "Blushing Hostess" that always kicks my appetite into overdrive every time I stop by. It's written by a young mother who has recently retired from the fashion industry, who has "an interested eye for great food, wine, manners, products, and old domestic niceties". These are some of the things you will find when you're there:

Menus, advice & entertaining ideas
Arrangements and garden florals
Table settings
Etiquette advice
Reader workshops
Entertaining historical tidbits and anecdotes
Beautiful rooms
Entertaining and host/hostess style products

Once in a while she even has special guests, this month she's going to have three gorgeous guys!

So if you're looking for some great new recipes, or advice on how to throw your next soiree', stop over at the Blushing Hostess blog- you will love it!

Ooh! That reminds me! Mr. LC and I have decided to throw a Halloween get-together here at TLC. We're having a hard time deciding on costumes...any ideas?

Layla :-)

  1. I will jump over and check her out her blog. I could certainly use all the help I can get in the kitchen. I love the way your chairs turned out in the last post. What a lucky girl you are to have a husband to help with projects(and he's so cute to boot). I will have to think on the Halloween idea. Have a great weekend, Missy

  2. Tim the Tool Man and his side-kick Al Borlan. Or Thing One and Thing Two from Cat in the Hat. Or Jayne and Tarzan. Or people from the Roaring 20's (Flapper and Gatsby). Or (can you tell I like halloween?) Sunny and Cher.

  3. I have the greatest picture of my parents when they were pre-children at a Halloween Party. My mom was dressed like the cowardly lion and my dad the tin man from the wizard of Oz. I've always thought they where the greats costumes :)

  4. One idea my brother and sister-in-law were thinking about last year was to go as Howie Mandel and a "case model" from "Deal or No Deal". Just a bald cap and suit for your husband, and a cute dress for you, and some type of silver case, maybe some play money, and you would be all set! Have fun!

  5. I love butter..., on my bagel, toast, or muffin..., and I'd never give it up! Regarding Halloween..., I'm kind of a bore when it comes to parties, so no idea.

    Happy Labor Day.

  7. I was going to suggest Joel & Dominique's idea for a Wizard of Oz costume. Dorothy and the Scarecrow would be cute. Year before last, the husband and I were Rhett & Scarlett. Last year I went as Marilyn Monroe, but he had to work--other wise he would have donned a baseball uniform and gone as Joe DiMaggio. ;)

  8. I suggest you go as a paint can and a paint brush!!!! It's perfect!

  12. Jon and Kate gosselin?

The guy (can't remember his name right now) and one of the girls from the Simply Irresistable video from the '80s.

You could go as Flo from those insurance commercials.

  13. Here are some of the 'costumes' i've done before - i've gone as a tornado by taking quilt batting, spray painting it gray - and then sticking toy cows, trucks, cars small doll house into the batting. I was also a peanut m&m when i was pregnant. V wants us to be a Jerry springer couple - him in a wife beater t-shirt and me in some housecoat of a dress, with cabbage kids attached to my legs and the housecoat - and rollers in my hair - i'm seriously considering it!

  15. Are you pregnant??? Just kidding - totally none of my business, especially since we don't know each other. But each of my four "seasons" of awaking in complete hunger have meant we were blessed with a wee one inside of me. I can hope for you!...

last year we did super heroes which was a lot of fun & ppl really got into it..

  18. I love the Lucky and Ricky Ricardo idea someone else posted...or how about Wonder Woman and Superman?

  19. I'm enjoying the fact that you are posting more regularly lately!

I think you should be your own version of super heroes - like Voluptor and Manly Man.

    Go for original and silly.....

  20. My sister does a huge Halloween bash every year that is themed. You can try a heaven and hell party. One room is heaven (think all white, pina coladas being served) one are is hell (bloody mary's etc.) and then one area in between was done up as purgatory. Everyone had to come dressed to a specific room (angels, devils, soul catchers.. you get the point). Another great year was a carnival theme with all carnival food and a haunted crazy house.

  21. I love Halloween and we have a big bash every year, so here's my ideas for the two of you.... you'd be a perfect Princess Bride and your hubs could go in all black with a mask-super easy and super comfortable. Or Popeye and Olive Oil. Or Edward Sissorhands and Winona Ryder (dressed in the cheerleader uniform). Or Donald Trump and Milania (sp). Or Dog the Bounty Hunter and Beth. Our best and most memorable contest winner at our house was One Night Stand. He built (super easy) a night stand out of cardboard painted it to look like a distressed nightstand that he could stand in, dressed in all black and used black suspenders to help hold up the night stand. He used a lampshade for his head made a ring on the table with hot glue and a beer can (to look like someone left a cold drink on the table and it left a ring), glued a plastic glass and a condom and wrapper to the top of the night stand and called it a One Night Stand. Get it!!! So funny! If you like this idea email me and I can send you a pic and give you some tips but really with the handiness of you two you could really make this look AMAZING. I hope this helps.

  22. I know you are looking for costume ideas but the latest issue of Midwest Magazine has a VERY Lettered Cottage idea for decorating. They took old black bond Edgar Allan Poe books and used them for vingettes. Chalkboard with quotes from the books and pages from the books for placemats. You could use any scary book and be characters from them and scatter them around. They also labeled things TLC style. Check it out! It's totally you.

  23. The magazine I mentioned earlier is really Midwest Living. Sorry

  24. what about Kid Rock and Pam Anderson? A friend of mine and her husband did that one year and it was priceless. I am thinking of doing a halloween party this year as well, I would love if you would pass along any ideas, especially food ideas. Have fun.

  25. Layla, love your blog! My husband and I bought matching t-shirts and overalls one year and I sewed the outside seam of the left leg of his to the outside seam of the right leg of mine and we were siamese twins. Lots of fun, but I had to eat when he wanted to eat and share the bathroom with him...our friends still laugh about that one!
