Guest Bathroom Reno - Day 11

Hello! Can you believe the week is almost over already? Tropical Storm Ida rolled through the day before yesterday and it rained sideways the entire day. Unfortunately I made the mistake of giving in to a strawberry milk craving around two o' clock that afternoon. My trip to Walgreens went something like this...

And by the time I got home I looked something like this...

But at least I got my strawberry milk!

:-)

While I was swimming back and forth from Walgreens, Kevin continued working on the guest bathroom.
So far it's been quite the little brain teaser. Neither of us are "math people" and this project has been riddled with the stuff.
Here's the equation he used to determine the exact location of the farmhouse table so that it would sit directly under the light fixture in the sink area...

Okay, fine. The dude in the cardigan did most of the figuring.

;-)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following video shows some footage Kevin put together over the past couple of days to document more of the reno process. He pulled me away from my office to talk a little bit about our plans for the room, so this time I need to apologize in advance for the giant rats nest located on the back side of my head during the interior portion of the video. ("Would have been nice if someones husband, ahem, would have told his wife, ahem, so that she could comb it before they shot a video for their blog", said the lady with the perpetually messy hair whose husband didn't think to mention anything because it looked no different this day than it did any other day.)
;-)

All that rambling and I forgot to mention that the mirror will actually be hung a little lower than it currently is AND we're going to paint the walls a more colorful hue as well. I've got a few shades in mind, and I predict a trip to the paint store in the near future. And speaking of paint, I'm so excited to see those table legs painted! I believe that's on Kevin's agenda today, so I'll post photos of it as soon as it's dry, the tabletop is conditioned and sealed, and after he's got the old sink securely in place.
I can't tell you how neat it is to finally want to go into this room. I've spent the last two years avoiding it as much as humanly possible, and cringing every time our guests ask, "can I use your bathroom?".
Even though it's far from finished, it's finally on its way, and there's no turning back now! :-)

Happy Thursday to you!

Layla

PS...Congrats to Jason and Sarah (Sham-Wow! and Flo) for winning our 2009 Halloweenie Roast costume contest!

  1. Hi!

Layla, please don't worry about the "rat nest" on the back of your head! Yours looks fantastic compared to the rat nest that grows over my entire head and is near impossible to tame! As for the bathroom, it is looking great so far. Can't wait to see it finished. I have a really old bath myself that needs help (lots of it) and seeing you and Kevin tackle this encourages me. By the way, I laughed through the whole video.

    Thanks,
    Lauren

  3. Hello sweet Lettered Couple! Layla, your "rats nest" hair looks a million times better than mine ever does on a good day, so don't sweat it! Loved the video, especially the ending - even though it had nothing to do with the reno, your "baby" is precious! Can't wait to see the bathroom continue to transform! Blessings!

  6. I just found your site a few days ago and have to say that I am in love with your fun style. It makes me feel so much better that there is someone else out there that goes at home renovation the same way that my DH and I do. All out! Somehow it seems that you guys get things accomplished just a little faster than we do though...hmmmm I will need to think about that today ;) Keep the videos coming they make my day!

  7. You literally made me laugh out loud...at work. That creepy and hilarious drenched cat picture did it :).

I'm loving watching your reno process. Keep up the good work!

  8. SUPER fun video and it was nice to see what you've done so far and the plans for the future. I laughed so hard on the part with your puppy. Too funny... Thanks for sharing it!

  9. It is not every blog that consistently makes me laugh out loud! :) What on earth was Kevin doing there at the end? Too funny!

I also appreciate that you all always keep things squeaky clean and my kiddos can watch with me. They heard Phil C. and all started running from every direction to plop down beside me and watch :)

And the LEAFBLOWER has arrived!!!! Thank you soooooo much! I'll post about it after weekend when Sam has a chance to do the yard work. Yay!

    XO,
Jacci (plus SweetP, Shug, Punkin, and Little Dude who think Mr. Kevin is super funny in those safety goggles)

  10. So glad the leafblower made it to you in one piece Jacci! We were a bit nervous about shipping it that way, but the gal at the UPS store said people do it that way all the time. Who knew?!

  11. LOVE IT, BUT IT DID HURT ME TO SEE YOU CUT THE TABLE UP, YIKES

  12. Hey Teresa!

Sorry about that! We actually saved the table from ending up in the trash, so maybe it will help ease your pain a little knowing that? <:-)

  13. LOL, I'm sooo glad this type of thing happens to you too, dont you hate when you see a woman walking down the street looking fab, with not a hair out of place while you battle to keep upright while scrapping your soaked hair off of your face and looking like you just came down with the last monsoon!!
    Very funny pics...giggle giggle.

  14. Oh the ideas that come out of your heads. I love the table idea. It is so cute. I wish my husband was at home to help me out like kevin is. My husband was out of work for 4 month(layed off) and wouldn't you know it he had a broken wrist at the time so he could not even do anything except tell me how beautiful I am. (ha ha!) Love the bathroom so far- that mirror is awesome too! can't wait to see more about that ceiling too!

  20. Bwahahaha. This post made me laugh out loud, because it really is like that outside right now. I live in Richmond, and I feel like it may never stop raining!

Sounds like the bathroom is coming right along!

  21. OK, now you two. That'll be just about enough of that! Don't you know that bathroom renos are not supposed to be fun? And there you two are ... mugging it up for the camera, making goofy faces and, dare I say it, giggling!

Seriously, you make me want to go rip my house apart right now just to go have that much fun.

  22. It's looking good! I also wanted to say thank you for stopping by my blog last week and commenting on the The Green Nest Store post. I literally screamed out loud and then proceeded to call my friends at 11:00 at night and scream in their ears that Layla from Lettered Cottage left a comment. You added a lot of excitement to this newbie blogger's life! There's a post on my blog of a tour of my friend Christian's master bath where they built a vanity kinda similar to yours and she added different colored rocks in shades of blue in a wavy pattern as the vanity backsplash. I'm not explaining that too well, but you might like it.

  23. Oh my gosh, i don't know if i'm like over empathizing, or what, but your video actually made my physically happy to watch. this whole "following 'The Lettered Cottage'" thing is starting to get embarrassing for me...

And, perfectly messy hair is an art form. and it should be respected. it can take 20 minutes to create a ponytail that appears to have been slept on...so kudos in that respect as well.

  24. ooooh, can't wait to see what it looks like done! :)

  25. Love your blog (secretly reading without posting for a while now)! My hubby and I reno alot too but have learned to enjoy it...with 3 boys running around it makes it a bit more of an adventure ;)

Kevin does great work Layla, and I bet you know it already! I was glad to see him wearing those goggles while he cut the table up but I really didn't want to see any particles (ie lead paint) end up in his eyes while sanding...please wear them more often Kevin! You have fab eyes!

BTW...Did Kevin used to play with Smashin Pumpkins? I could almost swear by it! :p

Love you videos Layla..I can't wait to see what music you use everytime :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey Nikki!

Kevin's band, Trust Company, has opened for Smashing Pumpkins, but he has never been a member. :-)

And you're right about him wearing those goggles more often! Thanks for the reminder!

  27. Glad to see that someone elses husband spends as much time dancing as working ! Mr Z spends at least half an hour choosing 'Work' music. As a Bass player its usually quite funky which is great cos his work rate goes down when he plays chilled out stuff !

  29. LOL!!!! I loved watching that video! I really love that you're using an old farm table. How cool is that???? Heck...maybe I'll work on my bathrooms now. Not. I still have so much work to do in my living room and kitchen that the bathrooms can just wait. :) I can't wait to see how yours turns out though!

  30. I LOVE the idea of using a farm table for a bathroom vanity!!! I have seen it done before, but it's so awesome that you and Kevin are making a bathumentary so we can all see how it's done! We are thinking about using SW Seasalt in a kitchen that we're remodeling, so I can't wait to see how it looks on your floor. That's the one you chose, right? Thanks for sharing your lives with the blog world!

  36. Thanks for sharing the Max footage!! :) I love the tile idea. Our first tile job involved the entire bathroom floor and shower walls. (starting smaller might have been a good idea....) It really isn't difficult though and the results are amazing!!
I can't wait to see your progress every post!

  37. This bathroom is looking SO fabulous-it is inspiring me to tackle the last "dated" bathroom in my little cottage. I too wanted to go with an old table, but was worried about water protection and cutting a sink hole and all! Please post the details on the whole process as I may talk the hubby into this!!! 44. Dearest Lettered Couple, I can't begin to tell you how much inspiration your "little" blog has given me. All 2 and a half baths in our home could use some "TLC" *wink wink* and when it comes time to reno our master bath, a farmhouse sink sure will be on my list of "wants". ...along with built in's and beadboard on the ceiling. Can I ask, how much of a mess did it make to rip out the old vanity (cabinetry etc.), any damage to the drywall that wouldn't be covered by new installs? As for a painted floor... so lucky of you two to have each other and not get that "you must be crazy" kinda look when an idea like that comes up. :) Love it. Cannot wait to see it in the end!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yea! A video!!! I love it! Can't wait to see the tiles, I really dig that idea. And seriously if you could redo your home, take & edit awesome videos, make us laugh and have perfect hair I don't think we could take it.

  51. Great video, Layla and Kevin. Your site is a regular stop on my internet surfing. The bathroom is looking great! Can't wait to see it finished. Glad you opted for deeper shelves - 16" is a good choice, just deep enough and not too deep.

But let's be clear about who really stole the show here...Max the wonder dog! He's a riot! More Max, more often!

    Cheers,

  55. Oh, I'm so excited about the farmhouse table!! It already looks great and will be amazing. There's an old farmhouse table in our basement - was there when we moved this summer. I imagine it was the original dining table? So it's quite long, but very similar to what you've got. I'm definitely saving it until I figure out what to do with it ... and get some power tools!

Keep it up on the bathroom!
