Yesterday morning we woke up bright and early, jumped in our car, and headed north on I-85 towards Atlanta. It's exactly three hours from our front door to Ikea's front door, and we enjoy making a couple of trips there each year for various things we want/need for our house. This time, however, we actually went to shop for a client- but that didn't stop us from taking advantage of our time there to look for a couple of things for our guest bathroom. :-)
We had an absolute ball strolling around the giant store. It's such an inspiring place!
Here is some footage Kevin put together to document our trip and to show the low-dough/high-impact items we brought home to use in our guest bathroom...
So...it doesn't look like we'll be finished with the bathroom by the 30th, but we're excited about the new additions and look forward to finishing sometime in December.
What's one more month, right? :-)
Happy Thanksgiving y'all!
Layla

OK, so I am up at an insanely late time watching your video, but I am desperately trying to get ready for the holiday. I just love Ikea! I like your sink but I'm really jealous over the light. That thing is cool! The bathroom keeps getting better and better. Gotta go to sleep, hope your Thanksgiving is superb.
ReplyDeleteLauren
You guys are turning out to be quite the video editors! Or should I say Kevin is!? LOL. Do you help, Layla? Very nice fixture for the reno!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are funny. I love your videos. I'm sure all of blogland knows of my love for IKEA. We live within 20 minutes of 2, that's right TWO, IKEA stores. Huzzah! Indy loves to go there because he gets to eat and go to the play place while Mommy shops until her heart is content. Too bad the Euro rate is sooooo bad right now.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your finished bathroom!
So funny, we had the same deadline. We move in on the 30th, so it's really crunch time at our house. Good luck with it all! It looks so great!
ReplyDeleteWow, it's so cool to see that IKEA in the states looks *exactly* like IKEA here in Sweden, its birthplace! We live a little closer to our store than you do to yours - about a 7 minute drive - so we're there a little more often :). And we have that very same fisherMAN's lamp! Been saving it from the last place we lived, but it's slated for installation over the kitchen table soon.
ReplyDeleteHaving grown up with IKEA here in Sweden I have to say it has become better and better over the years!
ReplyDeleteNow it's one of my favourite stores.
Thanks for a very nice blog!
Always nice to stop by! :)
I have to drive 3 hours to IKEA too, but I love love love that store! Fun video :)
ReplyDeleteIkea used to a favorite place to shop when I lived in MD and had access to one. Chef Stu loved the kitchen section.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have one near us any longer and you guys have made me miss it even more!!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Your video had me laughing at 7:00 in the morning, especially the part with Kevin taking a nap in the car (you'd think it was like a 7-hour drive). :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like you got some great stuff at Ikea and thanks for the idea of adding trim and crown moulding to the Ikea bookcases.
You have brought a whole new perspective of IKEA to me. I have to go there now! I will go on Saturday. I love the curtains, the light you bought and some of the stuff youw ere pointing ot while in the store.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are awesome!
HAve a great turkey day.
Zizette @ Chez zizi
What a fun day!
ReplyDeleteLove the fisherman's light! Can't wait to see what you add to it. Thanks for all the fun videos! Happy Thanksgiving you two!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thansgiving you two! Thanks for all the fun you have given me as I read and follow along your blog. I cannot wait for the reno to be done I the guest bath...just charming!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun day! I love Ikea and wish the great state of Alabama had one.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!

ReplyDeletehappy thanksgiving from Canada!!!..
Your bathroom is coming along beautifully! I too am an Ikea fan. We moved recently (USA), and I'm now 20 minutes from the Ikea. Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the trip with you (your videos are so sweet and so much fun) and I love the light fixture!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
I just love all those great room settings at Ikea, i so want to go to one, the nearest one to me is about 4 hours away in france, and I would heve to catch a boat to get there! Ohhhhh so not fair.
ReplyDeleteOkay y'all. I'm completely in love with your new sink and faucet (oh YEAH, IKEA!) And that FisherMAN's light is perfect!
ReplyDeleteWhen y'all have your own show, I'll get to say "I knew you when"!
;-)
I love Ikea! I love the things you got! You two are so much fun to watch. Keep up the good work. By the way out closest Ikea store is a nine hour drive :-0
ReplyDeleteIkea is our favorite home store! Wish they were here in Las Vegas. I loved walking the store.
ReplyDeleteMarcus and I are off to volunteer at our church. My husband is in for a long day at Kmart.
We had our Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. Marcus and I made the whole dinner. It was my first turkey! And my husband loved it!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Happy thanksgiving Kevin and Layla:
ReplyDeleteLayla, I totally love your happy and joyful spirit. IKEA is a fun place. We bought our farmhouse sink, faucet and kitchen countertops from them last year. I love the idea for your bathroom. We are getting ready to redo our bathroom on a very tight budget so am really trying to get ideas, love your farmhouse table idea.
Enjoy your day.
LeAnn:)
Oh my gosh. Kevin you crack me up. I love watching your little videos you guys, and that light, oh my. I'm gonna have to make me a little 3 hour trip to IKEA.
ReplyDeleteHi "Beautiful Handmade"!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, we usually take turns editing, but since I'm still working on getting caught up on design consultations, Kevin's been doing the editing (and renovating!) lately. (I look very forward to getting my hands dirty again in 2010 though!) :-)
We taught ourselves how to edit so that we could try our hand at wedding videography the year before last. We quickly learned that we didn't enjoy that line of work AT ALL- too much pressure! So we quit doing that to chase our dreams, and work in fields we were passionate about- music and interiors. Unfortunately, that meant selling all of our nice video equipment so that we could use the money to pay a couple of mortgage payments last year. Hence the crappy little camera we have now! Sorry it's always so dark and the sounds quality isn't great!
<:-O
One of our goals is to buy back the type of camera we used to have.
It was a Canon GL2 and it was awesome! One day.....
:-)
Layla
You are the most adorable couple and I love watching your videos! Your bathroom reno is turning out so good...can't wait to see the finished space. I seriously think you should have your own DIY show!! We live exactly 2 hours from the nearest Ikea and we are headed there tomorrow for the weekend!! Yippie!
ReplyDeleteps. Hope I didn't offend the other day with the preggers comment...I didn't mean it in a bad way...your top fooled me. You always look fabulous!
Happy Thanksgiving Layla! I love Ikea too. We have one here about 1 hour from where I live. It is a great store to go to a couple times of year.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and Kevin have a wonderful Holiday!
Love the trip to IKEA. We have one roughly two hours away and have been wanting to make a trip there. Is there anyway that you could tell me how much the ceramic sink runs? We are about to tackle our guest bathroom as well & been looking for one but can't find one within our price range.
ReplyDeleteHey Sandi!
ReplyDeleteThe sink was $90 and you can find it here:
Hollviken Sink
And the faucet can be found here:
Apelskar Faucet
Good luck with your reno.
Don't forget to have fun!
Layla :-)
You two are too cute! Seriously. And the outtakes add an extra bit of fun to the mix. Happy Thanksgiving to you both.
ReplyDeleteAmy
Yay! You showed Max! That alone makes my day since I can not keep up with lipreading y'all.
ReplyDeleteCan NOT wait to see the end result of your bathroom. Love that new lighting....
I live about 1 1/2 hours from Philly, need to make a trip to check out the IKEA store soon!
I like your sink but I'm really jealous over the light. That thing is cool!

Hi Kevin and Layla
ReplyDeleteTwo words! "Thank you" (okay more than two) from the bottom of my heart, for all of the inspiration. You two "ROCK"!
I'm lucky as I am 1 1/2 hours away from 2 Ikea stores. Both located in Toronto
I can't wait to see your finished bathroom! I have been checking your blog for a couple of weeks and I love it!! I love Ikea too! :O) Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteKelly
I was trying to explain IKEA to my husband before his first trip with me to the store in Pittsburgh. My description? "Ikea is the Home Depot of home furnishings."
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
Oh I wish we had one here. I cant believe Baton Rouge doesnt have one yet..awww maybe one day. Happy Thanksgiving to my favorite bloggy couple ever~ Susie Bloop
ReplyDeleteGreat video! That's some road trip for Ikea!! Luckily I've got one about 30 minutes from home.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are rock stars!
ReplyDeleteHeading to ours (only 1 1/2 hours)
As I type!
Great scores!
I've followed your blog for over a year. I think you're very talented and I love reading about your projects.
ReplyDeleteI wish you would do less video, though, or at least do text also. I can't watch the videos from work, and I don't always have audio on my computer at home. I feel I'm missing out on a lot.
Love Ikea, really enjoy your blog and ideas, and seriously enjoy the music in the background. I'm not a music person in that I don't know bands or names or songs, but I LUV listening to music, and I really enjoy what you use as background for your videos...Including the first song on this video....ran out of time to watch the entire thing b/c company is coming for Thanksgiving Round 2. So, can you please let me know what song/group you played? Thanks so much!

I love watching the progress on your home. You two are doing a wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the music used in the Ikea video, especially the first song?
Dana
I love to watch you two, what a fun couple. I live by and IKEA and yes it is wonderful. Love the lights and now know what I will do with 2 of them, thank you.
ReplyDeleteIs that Kevin's music in the video's? I like it.
Hi -
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom is going to look great! I think I am going to steal a couple ideas from you guys for my master bath redo!
Please tell me the name of the song/artist of the music in your video - love it!
Keep up the inspiration!
mwin1@aol.com
hey you two ... kind of off topic here, but really just wanted to send you warm wishes for a lovely thanksgiving weekend ... so grateful for you and what you both bring to this community ... BIG HUGS!
ReplyDeletecheers,
prairiegirl xo
Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteTo answer the questions about the music we used for this video, it was:
Stolen by Dashboard Confessional &
I drove all night by Cyndi Lauper
Thanks for stopping by!!!
Kev
Awesome choices...love the sink and can't wait to see how the lantern turns out. Esp. good choice of music.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! I love the things you got. Especially the fisherMAN's light. We don't have an IKEA but now I must google their locations to find the nearest one. We're building a house and you're always giving us a lot of ideas to run with!!! Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Guys! I live 15 minutes from that IKEA! I had never been in one until about a year ago. My jaw literally dropped when I walked in!
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom is looking so great.
I am so impressed with Kevin's work. Seriously, it looks professionsl from where I am sitting!
IKEA is like disneyland for grown-ups. And the super-cheap cafeteria is completely worth checking out.
ReplyDeleteI really dig the bathroom tiles you found, by the way. Can't wait to see it all together. It's been very cool to watch the whole process, and especially to see that you didn't just crank it out over one weekend - I love that!!
Happy "belated" Thanksgiving and WAR EAGLE!! LOVE you purchases from IKEA..I've never been! LOVE LOVE LOVE the light! I'd like to do something like that over my bar in the kitchen...hmmm!! The video was too cute AND I loved the background music!!
ReplyDelete{{Big Hugs}} and Go Florida, LOL!
Cathy
Wow, you guys are so flippin' cute! I love watching your videos. You crack me up. Reality tv has nothing on you guys! Keep up the videos...I love it!
ReplyDeleteLayla & Kevin,
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying your bathroom reno project. Do you think the FisherMan's light would work as an exterior light for a covered porch with high beadboard ceilings? I think you said it is aluminum with a glass globe. Our old farmhouse has a galvanized metal roof and we've recently wrapped a huge porch around the house. The price is right!!
wow 3 hrs! I have an IKEA so close to my house (maybe 5 miles) that I can go there for lunch! Swedish Meatballs for 99c w/ coupon. yum!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun video. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAfter a busy holiday weekend I have FINALLY gotten a chance to watch the video. My sister lives only ten minutes from Ikea (LUCKY!) and brought me two sets of curtains from them this weekend. "Lill" which you have in your guest room and I will be using in mine as well. And "Lenda". Super super super long white curtains for my newly reno'd (is that a word?) kitchen. That fisherMAN's light fixture is perfect for the idea I have for our little 'man's bathroom... off to the website to search for it now. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving your bathroom reno. But I have to say, that I cried a little bit thinking about how awful it is that you have to drive THREE HOURS to an IKEA! :( Is there an address I can write to IKEA to have them wake up and build near The Lettered Cottage???!!!
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting 5 years for IKEA to open in Denver (site grading in progress, open next year, fingers-crossed) OMG, watching your IKEA video was like home decorating porn!! *tongue out, eyes glazed over, in my mental happy place*
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about that apron-front kitchen sink; I TOTALLY covet that!
I just bought 2 of those lanters at IKEA!! Can't wait to see what you do with yours!!
