Guest Bathroom Reno - Day 51

"Hey babe?" (Layla)

"Yes...." (Kevin)

"Now that we have little square tiles all over the wall, I'm worried that the room is gonna look a little "square-crazy" with the checkerboard pattern on the floor." (Layla)

"So you don't want to paint the floor anymore?" (Kevin)

"I don't think we should." (Layla)

"Well what are we gonna do with it?" (Kevin)

"Funny you should ask. I was just doing some research about an inexpensive, peel-and-stick, vinyl plank called Novalis that I think might match the top of our farmhouse table perfectly. It's supposed to be really easy to install, and because it's vinyl, it'll be super durable and waterproof. It's textured like real wood, which is cool, and it should only cost about $50 to do the whole room." (Layla)

"sigh......okay, if you think it'll look good, and that we can swing it. " (Kevin)

"Yay! Do you want to go get it now?" (Layla)

"I guess, but I'm gonna let you break it to our readers that we're not painting the checkerboard pattern anymore." (Kevin)

  3. We're planning on using the same flooring in our bathrooms as soon as we hurdle the holidays. It looks great. Can't wait to see the finished room. Sure its gonna be fabulous!

  4. I'm really looking into wood flooring options for my small bathroom as well and this is intriguing me. I would love to hear an update from you in about a month (after your bathroom honeymoon is over) on how this vinyl flooring holds up, how it installs, if it comes across as "vinyl" after its not so new, and if you are ultimately happy with the choice or would have rather gone with a real wood or pergo. I think it looks lovely.

PS: So far, the wall tile is my favorite part.

  5. Whoa.........looks great! The whole bathroom looks fantastic. Can't wait for more.

  7. Well, I'm still rooting for the squares painted on the floor. This new floor does look very nice, but after hearing about the painted floor, and not getting it...*sigh*. Can't wait to see what you'll do next!

  8. I think it's wonderful looking - I would definitely use it myself. A good look (and practical for a bath) at a great price!

  9. Hey...I have that in the garage ready to go on the laundry floor...was it as easy peasy as it seems?

  10. I love the Novalis flooring! Haven't had any personal experience with it, but saw it in Lowe's about two years ago and thought it was a brilliant idea and am seriously considering using it in my kitchen and elsewhere in the house. It looks remarkably like wood, has very realistic texture, yet has all the advantages of vinyl. I even did some research online and found a number of comments by folks who used it and are very pleased with it. Nice choice!

  11. It's a woman's prerogative to change her mind -- and we do it again and again and again ... just ask "The Man" about our bathroom wall color!

I think you made the right choice; as usual!

  12. Hey gang!

I've been holding my breath, waiting for the comments to come rollin' in about this one. :-) Wasn't sure what everyone would think of my decision!

"Country Contemporary"- I, too, did LOTS of research and read TONS of positive reviews about the Novalis product online, (they're were some really great ones on the Garden Web site), so I felt pretty confident about it. You'll be glad to know it's a SNAP to install, so have fun with your upcoming projects!

  14. LOVE IT!

I was secretly hoping you might do a wood or wood look floor! Looks so classic... so next time you change your mind, you dont need to paint the floor to match!

Can't wait to see those adorable accessories you showed us a lifetime ago like the toothbrush holder <3

  15. We have it and love it! We put it in our "playroom" since it can be easily washed when my daughter spills (which she does often). Over a year later, it is still fantastic.

  16. I love it! I really wanted to see the painted floor (I love the look of them) but I think this goes beautifuly!

  18. Hey Layla,
I put this in my teenage son's room and it is awesome. Most people think it is real wood unless they get down and feel it. He can scoot his furniture all over, they have even skateboarded on it until I found out what the crashing sound was!! It is easy to clean and I picked the darkest brown. The only downside I can see is that for tough wear we may have to replace it in a few years but he is going to college. For simple use I think it will wear great. I actually would love it in my kitchen. I like it much better than the floating pergo on my other son's bedroom floor. Does anyone else have comments?

  20. We used a flexible plank flooring product in our kitchen that looks exactly like real wood...Adura by Mannington. It wasn't a peel and stick product, we actually had to glue it down plank by plank but it was easy for us to do because the planks were flexible and easy to score and glue into place. Our floor looks amazing and we get compliments on it all of the time. It was such a great choice over laminate for our kitchen. We do not worry about water at all. I hope that you will love your floor as much as we love ours! I think that you made a great choice!

    ReplyDelete
  21. OK, fair enough, but can you go paint a different floor then? Because I want to see what it looks like!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oooh - I am dying to try those vinyl planks!! It looks perfect! Sometimes you've just gotta roll with the punches, right?!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good choice. I love what you have done so far. You make this look way too easy.

  24. I love it! It is so funny you decided to use this, my friends kitchen just flooded and she was trying to decide what to use and I told her about this exact product!

Can't wait to see it all done!

  25. This looks awesome. Thanks for telling us about this product. . . read all the reviews on Lowe's and sounds like it is perfect for a bathroom, or even a kitchen. Bookmarking this one. . .do you think I'd have to rip up the vinyl in our bathroom before I stuck it down? Or could I just slap it on top?

  26. we've been considering this flooring too. please keep us posted on how it wears!lookin good!!

  27. Love it! Can't wait to see the whole room.

  31. Like everything else you do, it looks simply fabulous!!

We are about to redo our guest bath and I considered using the vinyl plank but I don't know how that will look coming off of the real hardwood flooring we have throughout the rest of the house.

Does it look funny having two different hardwood floors together...especially if the two colors don't exactly match?

  32. Beautiful ... is it really as easy as they say to install?

  33. Love this floor! It really looks great, and you can't beat the price. Merry Christmas, you too!

  35. Love that Kevin made YOU break the news to all of us! haha

I was excited to see your painted floor...but I love the new look, so I have to say it was a great decision. And...I remember you were going to paint the floor 1st & decided to wait until the end. Aren't you(I mean, Kevin) glad you did!?! So that you didn't paint the checkerboard & THEN end up going a different route???

    LOVE IT!

  36. =( I was SOOOO looking forward to the painted, checkered floors.

But I guess it is YOUR bathroom... and does look nice.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i have to admit, i'm kinda bummed we won't be getting a step-by-step how-to guide to panting a checker board floor, but kudos on simple design at a great price. Besides, unnecessary busy-ness (ie. muchos squareos) makes me crazy, so it sounds like you've made a wise choice. :)

  38. I have to agree sometimes less is more. I like how it turned out. I think your right not to just go with a trend or idea if you dont feel it would be right. Maybe it would have been to "squary".I cant wait to see it all finished. GOOD LUCK! Happy Holidays Kevin and Layla (TLC) Your place looks lovely all decked out with the holiday spirit. Keep up the great work! ... Julie in Holland :)

  41. The floor looks great, guys. I have seen this product used before and always thought that the resulting look was fantastic. The room is coming along beautifully. I am excited to see it with the "new" vanity top.

    Merry Christmas!

  42. Looks awesome! I love checkered floors, but you called that right. My brother installed a darker version into a house he flipped last year. Everything about it has been good! You will be happy with your choice.

  43. The floor looks great.

I especially am glad that you wrote about it because, I have been trying to convince my husband that we can buy an older home and fix it up some. We live near the Smoky Mountains and there are some wonderful old homes here. He is worried about doing things he's never done before, like laying floors. So this was a great post to show him that we could do it!

  44. Just last night the hubby and I were discussing what we intend to do with our little mans bathroom/guest bathroom floor! Thanks to this lovely info. I'll be looking into this "snap" of an option. :)

  45. What??? You know, I was hoping for a "How to paint a checker board floor" tutorial!! Oh well, I won't hold it against you! Your new idea will be beautiful too! ;)

  51. Looks fantastic! I'll have to look into that for my new craft room.

  52. Love the floor. I have been itching to put it down in the kids/guest bath for a couple of years now, but the floor is in good condition and not ugly. hmmm. might be a new year's project.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I used this same flooring in my art studio. It's been down about 7 mos or so and it still looks fantastic! The seams are all still tight and I can't tall you how many times I've dropped paint, glue etc on it and it wipes right up - even after it's dry. (we're talking acrylic and latex paint and usually a decoupage medium/white glue)

But seriously, easy clean up and great durability!

  54. Did you use anything special under the tiles since it's a bathroom? I'm thinking about doing this project myself in my kids' bathroom.

    Looks great!
