1. PEELING THE CEILING
I know there's an original tongue-and-groove wood ceiling underneath the drywall that's currently covering the dining room now. And since tearing out drywall doesn't cost anything, and I've still got almost a whole gallon of "barely blue" paint, I think this re-do is a no-brainer!

Convincing Kevin that tearing down drywall and painting ceilings is fun may be tricky after his guest bathroom experience.
But it's worth a shot, right?
:-)
2. FIND MORE FLEA MARKET FURNITURE
I'm a huge fan of marrying a variety of sweet, old flea-market-find seating with a big, old flea-market-find dining table.
They just seem to make the cutest "couple".
:-)
Remember our big, old flea-market-find table?
Move your cursor back and forth over the photo to see it in action!
I must confess, we've already painted the legs a different color.
(I'll show you them soon!)
But after seeing the tabletop in the photo below- I am inspired to sand down the top of our table for a more rustic look...
Inspiration:
Photo: Country Living
Cost to sand down the tabletop: FREE!
And gathering a couple more quirky chairs won't cost us anything either because we've picked up so many of them over the past few years.

I'll just need to scour the house to see what I can come up with for no-dough.
Wish me luck!
I'll leave you with some more blue ceiling/mis-matched chair inspiration from the dining room of the 2008 Country Living House of the Year:
In this room, the designer used a color called "Topsail" by Sherwin Williams (SW #6217)on the ceiling, and united the mis-matched chairs by painting them all the same, dark shade of paint, and re-upholstering them in a pretty, gray fabric.
Hope you enjoy the tour as much as I did!
Happy Tuesday!

Just wanted to let you know...you've got coconut on your forehead.
ReplyDeleteHa! Seriously, lol, you don't have to post this - but I looooved meeting you on Thursday. All of you were the sweetest folks:) I'm glad you made it back home safely {we've got snow now!}
The blue ceiling idea is fabulous! Looking forward to seeing what you do!
Oh. You are no longer moderating your comments. Forget the whole coconut bit, lol!
ReplyDeleteI love it all, can't wait, can't wait to see..where's the coconut? lol..i missed something didn't I..lol ~lulu
ReplyDeleteI love your table!!!!
ReplyDeleteI did! I did! Wonderful post ~~
ReplyDeleteI have several older flea market pieces and have been wondering about sanding them down also. Would love to see your projects and your opinion on how they turned out.
ReplyDeleteLalya,
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of exposing the ceiling planks and painting them. (Not sure Kevin will though.) Hmm, are you starting to run out of rooms so you are redo-ing some of yours? If so, I've got a BIG house I'll let you loose in!
Btw, Kevin is mentioned in my post today.
Deborah
Love it, go for it girl! The video rocks.
ReplyDeleteWe have a farmhouse table too (inherited from my Opa and Oma) and I've alwas wondered what to do with it. Thanks for the inspiration! I LOVE frugal makeovers!
ReplyDeleteI love the inspirational pictures! I think you have come up with some great no-cost ideas for your house.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,
Traci
ooohhhh! I love your dining room table!
ReplyDeleteI love your dining room and what a blessing to have the board ceiling, that would look just gorgeous. I can't wait to see what else you do. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI think your ideas sound lovely. I'm sure you'll be able to talk Kevin into it. You seem to have a real knack for that! ;0) We just painted our bedroom ceiling soft blue last weekend. I love it with my "rice grain" walls. Can't wait to see pictures!
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog! Now I'm following along. :)
ReplyDeleteLayla, you always come up with the best pictures ever.
ReplyDeleteI love, love the extra long dining room table with mixed matched chairs along with the casual look of everything on the table.
There it looks amazing, at my house now that kiddies are gone it might make me coo-coo to "tidy up"every few minutes. hehe
Love the idea of another exposed ceiling.
Maybe Kev would be inspired as a prez for VALENTINES DAY .
Happy Tuesday back. geri.
I can't wait to see it when you're done!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful inspirations...can't wait to see it all done!
ReplyDeleteJust curious how you know there is a tongue and groove ceiling up there? We live in a 1912 cottage and I would LOVE to rip out my ceilings... but there is no way to convince hubby if it's not a sure thing :) Downstairs, all of our ceilings are different heights, which is weird, do you think I could assume I have something awesome underneath our ugly 70's ceilings? :)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your finished ceiling!
ReplyDeleteI already have mismatched chairs, and I actually do love them... working on a new table top soon!
You have the best ideas but before you get going....did Kevin finish the bathroom? I want to see. Let that dear man have a break Layla...you're killing him. :)
ReplyDeleteSo cool! Great part of projects like that is that the hardest part is convincing the husband. Best part is sitting in the next roon watching him bring a little more sunshine into your life.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!

okay... how did you do the photo of the table with the leaf coming out??? Do tell please!
ReplyDeleteLove the blue board ceiling, you don't have to convince me!
Can't wait to see the finished project! Love all the inspirational pictures.

Fantastic ideas. I especially love the idea of taking down the ceiling to expose some tongue-and-groove board. Can't wait to see the results.
ReplyDeleteWe found an english pub table similar to yours last year at an auction. We love the barley twist legs and the beauty of the old wood! I've moved it around to several places because it really is too small for our family to use as an everyday dining table but I think we've finally decided to use it as a library table. I can't wait to put stacks of books and collections on it :-)

I want your gift! Why did God not give me your gift? lol. I'm not totally dumb to interior design (my husband tells me I'm talented) but gosh your home is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteFunny, I was just re-reading through my Country Living magazines, and just read about the 2008 House of the Year a few nights ago! Love it!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Grace
That ceiling is drool worthy all right. The contrast against those walls is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love all of your inspiration photos and can't wait to see how your dining room turns out. That blue ceiling is gorgeous and I love the idea of mix matched chairs, it gives a space instant character!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
Just DO IT!!
ReplyDeleteYou know you will and in record time, no doubt!
I've been wanting to "raw down" a
table for MANY months---I'm about ready to grab the sander and just have at it right in the kitchen!
Let those boys eat a little wood dust and then they'll be happy to help me move a piece to the barn next time...
annie
Getting started is always the hardest part!!! And of course you know the one that says,"It always looks worse before it gets better". Can't wait to see the changes!!
ReplyDeleteI know it will look fabulous. My dining room is a work and progress/half done. A barn wood trestle table with no chairs yet because I check CL every day with no luck. I'll just have to wait for estate and yard sale season. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see yours all come together!
Thank you! The Country Living photo of the sanded-down table told me exactly what I want to do with my thrift store $35 oak table that looks exactly like that one!
ReplyDeleteI showed the photo to my husband and he liked it, too!
Another project (albeit easy) to add to the list!
TammyR
Ok. Haha these inspiration photos inspired me! I'm ready to tackle a ceiling, etc. My favorite photo was the first one with the blue ceiling...stunning!
ReplyDeleteThat first picture from Country Living with the dark walls is in my inspiration folder...love, love, love it! Every single thing about that room...I LOVE!
