The Lettered Cottage Magazine- Screened Inn Issue

Hey there!
I hope all is well in your neck of the world this spendid Saturday afternoon.

Everything is groovy over here at TLC.

Well, except for the fact that I'm still hobbling around here due to the large-and-in-charge invisible shards of glass embedded in the ball of my foot and big toe.

Yowza!

But it's all good in the hood.
I've had more time to SIT and work on design consultations, and put the finishing touches on the Screened Inn e-zine!

The photos I included this time are of the living/dining room.
(Oh, and I snuck in some exterior shots of the place this time too!)

Here's how the living/dining room looked when we got there...

We had such a great time working on this cottage for Diane at Mermaid Cottages, and we'll never forget the June we spent on Tybee.

And we wanna send out a big thanks to everyone who helped us with the re-do.
(Friends, painters, handymen, gardeners, cleaning crew, sponsors and my Mom!)
You RULE, and we certainly couldn't have finished on time or on budget without you!

Now that we've finished the "just for fun Screened Inn e-zine", we're pretty excited to see whatcha think of the "for real premiere issue of The Lettered Cottage e-zine" we've been putting together.
(Which, by the way, we're hoping to release in August or September!)
Among other things, it'll include uplifting articles, step-by-step tutorials, ce"web"rity interviews, inspiring interiors, and even some video segments too.
We hope ya dig it!

(PS- so that we can (hopefully!) continue to release the Lettered Cottage e-zine on a regular basis, we're on the lookout for advertisers who want to snag a spot in the upcoming premiere issue. If you're interested in hearing about the rates for either a half, or full page ad- please drop me a line at LaylaPalmer@aol.com. Thank you!)

  2. I love the E-zine. You guys do such an awesome job. I love the stripes on the wall of the living room.

Thanks for the great tip on the ticking rug at TJ Maxx. I ended up getting a large one, 2 runners and 2 small ones...among other things. It was a day of scores at TJM! Thank you!

  5. Layla, you and Kevin have done such a fabulous job of transforming this mess hall. You've turned into a hum-drum historic spot, to a "I just HAVE to stay there" place to be.

I especially love that you decided to use so many fun colors in the house. It definitely has the beach vibe, but I sense a little bit of retro feeling there as well. Every room is wonderful, and every single element well thought out.

The book you have put together is absolutely amazing. It is truly a first class, professional production. Kudos, kudos, and double kudos on that.

I hope this project brings many more your way so that you can see and do the things that make you happy. I'm sure the owner was tickled pink with it, and I have no doubt there have been and will continue to be, one sightseer after another coming to see what the excitement has been about.

    Fantabulous job!

  6. I love, love, love the starfish "moving art"! That is such a great idea. We have lots of jars filled with sand and seashells that I collected on our honeymoon. It's so nice to be surrounded by those things!

The Screened Inn turned out so nicely... hope my husband and I can stay there some day. Layla and Kevin, your work inspires me!

    Thank you.

  7. What a wonderful before and after!

The Screened Inn is the type of place I would love to visit - the two of you (and all your helpers) did a really good job on creating a sanctuary.

I hope your foot feels better soon - tiny shards of glass are little devils, aren't they?

  10. I feel like I always say how much I love it, and maybe that's getting old, but seriously, I LOVE IT! I went to Ikea last night for bedding in my little girl's room, and kept thinking, "If Layla were here with me right now, what fabrics and patterns would she throw together?" You are so my inspiration!!

    :)

  23. Dear Layla and Kevin,
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you BOTH for sharing the Screened Inn transformation. I have been a follower of your blog for a while and am always inspired but have been renting. Just last week we gained possession of our own VERY old house after it had been tenanted for several years. It was heart breaking to see how our home had been neglected.
This is where you come in. I have opened your e-zine every day and spent moments looking and being inspired. Although our home is WAY older than the mess hall (a fibro cottage in Australia) I can finally see that there are some things we can do to make it our own again. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping me daily and inspiring me to have fun and decorate our home so that we can once again love living in it.
    Thank you x Janelle

  28. It is so beautiful. Lots of inspiration for all of us. Can we purchase a copy of the magazine? Are you going to print it? It is better than all the ones I see on the magazine racks!

  29. I love EVERY room. My only complaint....seriously.....I wish there were even MORE photos. Great job guys. You rocked that one out for sure!

  30. Layla and Kevin, what an amazing job of both the cottage and the magazine. I've looked at it about a million times now -- so inspiring. Anyhow, just wanted to let you both know that we fell in love with your redecorating of Screened Inn and your beautiful accounts of Tybee Island, so much so that we just booked the cottage for our vacation. Can't wait to see your brilliance in person. Well done!!!!

  32. Layla & Kevin-I'm a LONG time follower of your blog. You both have such amazing talent--what a perfect team you make!!

I thought you did an incredible job putting your magazine together however, I do hope this isn't a permanent change for your blog! The reason I gravitate to blogs instead of magazines (paper) is the fact that blogs usually feature pictures and plenty of text with "how tos" that most magazines leave out.

I've always loved the feature you used with the "before" picture I could run my curser over to reveal the "after" picure.

After reading the comments, I think I'm in the minority here..gulp! Besides, I'd follow you no matter what format you go with.

    The very best to you!!

  33. You guys and your ezine rock, I love the house and I love how you put it all together with pictures, captions and descriptions. Even my 3 year old daughter loved sitting on my lap and looking at all the pretty pictures with me. It's perfect timing since I am trying to redo the house we just bought with a beachy/cottagey style. Thanks for all the great inspiration, and I wish I could head down there and visit right now. Between your blog and last month's BH&G, I'm now dying to visit Tybee island!

  34. Wonderfully inspiring!
I love your rustic easy-life furniture and details, solid and fun at the same time.
Thank you for sharing your work and ideas!

  35. You need to publish a paper edition! So beautiful! I want to add the whole thing to my files for house ideas.

  36. Hi Layla & Kevin.
Well I have just looked through your amazing e-zine for like the
    20th time.
Each time I see something different and beautiful and oh so creative.
Each time I read something that you have written, or a qoute, it takes on a new meaning.
Each time I dream of how my house would look and feel I know exactly where to go for all my inspirations and design choices.
The best part of you both is not just that you shared all your energy and money saving ideas and talents and love of decorating, but that you have the abilty to make a cottage on a wee budget look & feel like a "Million Dollar Baby"!
I hope one day to get the whole Screened Inn experience first hand.
Not sure I could love it anymore though than I already do.
    Hugs,& Cheers! geri.

  43. If you don't win some kind of award for this (I don't know, MTV, HGTV...something!) i'll be shocked!!

The stripes in the living room are EXACTLY what I want to do in our hallway...colors and widths of the strips please?! Pretty please!! :) I'm in love and we're planning on staying this fall...can't wait!

  44. Good luck with the new e-zine. With what I've seen so far of the Screened Inn e-zine, it's sure to be a huge success. BTW, a little trade secret tip from a former print magazine sales rep - add quarter-page ads to your e-zine ad sizes if at all possible (why wouldn't it be?) and price them so that a full page of four 1/4-pagers totals more than the cost of a full page. The size is more appealing and affordable to more advertisers and - the good part - a full page of them means more revenue for you!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Absolutely fantastic! Both the redesign and the ezine! You two are so talented. We just bought and redid a beach house on Cape Cod, and I am going to adopt lots of your finishing touches as soon as we go back up there!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow - what an amazing job in decorating the Screened Inn. You have a gift! And the e-zine is amazing - I'm going to print it out and save it to my "inspiration" notebook. LOVE IT!!!!

  47. Hi Layla and Kevin. I've commented before on how talented you both are, but want to tell you how much I enjoyed the ezine. Today I paid about $13 for the new special edition of Country Home magazine. I would pay more than that for this ezine. I'll be looking back at it for a long time to get some ideas. I've had glass in my foot, too, Layla and hope you are feeling better.

  48. it is absolutely beautiful! i know you had a blast doing it and i can't wait until we go on our vacation next year - this will definitely be on the top of the list for places to visit!

  49. Layla, your e-zine just made my day! You and your husband are SO very talented. I absolutely love everything you've done to the Tybee Island beach house!

  50. Simply beautiful, you have inspired me! Just curious-you said the bedding in the Lemonade Mermaid was Diane's-any idea where she purchased the white comforter/duvet cover? If I cant find it I may have to make my own. I love the femininity with out having to add a feminine color.
    Thank You for sharing!

  51. What an amazing job you did on the Screened Inn! I love it!! I do have a question about the bathroom...the tile in it is the same tile we bought to put in our bathroom (clearance at Lowes)the one thing I am not sure about it what color of grout to use. What color of grout was used there? It looks like it is either black or dark gray. I have also thought about white grout, but know that it would stain easily. That you for the input.
Looking forward to seeing more projects from you.
