Since my heart literally skips a beat each time a new shelter mag appears in my mailbox, I decided to have some fun and display the master bedroom photos we shot at Screened Inn "magazine style" in this post.
(My blog is my playground, and passion pushes my swing!)
But before you look at the "pages" I put together, let's check out the "before" photos once again, shall we?
We had a totally blank slate to work with, and the walls had just been coated with Benjamin Moore's "Moonlight White" a few days before we got there.
Since the goal of this project was to "pull together a pretty place on a penny", and because Diane already had tons and tons of great furniture and bedding for us to work with when we got to the house, we really didn't have to purchase that many additional items for this room.
All we added was a small jar & flower, two red & white striped pillow covers, two white chenille euro shams, some bath towels, a bath mat and a whole buncha' vinyl wall words.
We found everything else (furniture, bedding, lamps, desk, chair, settee, etc.), along with loads of other stuff, sitting in the living room the first day we arrived. (Diane owns a few different cottages on the island- hence, all the great stuff she had just lying around!)
Here's what we came up with...
And there ya have it!
One extra-sweet, shabby chic, master suite!
Some of my favorite things we incorporated into the room are
- the stacked doors as an extra-tall headboard
- the rusty chandelier in the bathroom
- the quilt draped across the end of the bed that we borrowed from my friend Jane
- the red & white striped pillow covers "Seamstress Sally" made
(I'm such a sucker for a stripe!)
- the vintage tablecloth as wall art
(Funny story- The day before our open house we realized we didn't have a large piece of art for the wall above the desk. Thanks to one heckuva cool tablecloth Diane had left on the kitchen counter the day before, we were able to create a unique wall-hanging that just happened to match the room beautifully too!)
- the vinyl wall words
(Courtesy of LeenTheGraphicsQueen.com. Click here to read about her experience on Tybee!)
The big quote on the wall reads:
"I think that there is no truer place than an island.
Whether it's a sandbar or a bubble-up of volcanic rock or a jut of tropical coral,
an island stands only by some whim of fate, given a chancy foothold among the chaos. An island often makes you change your sense of perspective, your mind and your direction too. With the tide coming in over the castles you build, the currents sweeping you places you didn't plan on going, the mists rolling in mysteriously over what you thought was clear.
When I go to an island, I know that I'm in that state of grace in which anything can happen."
Hope you enjoyed the tour of the master bedroom.
I'll be back soon with photos of the kitchen and middle bath!

As a fellow island resident, albeit on a different island, I particularly love this room.. There is nothing like island life. I'll have to get a copy of that quote.

Oh guys, you did yourself proud! This room is simply exquisite. From the bright and energizing red to the cool and restful acua/blue and sand colors, it's just perfect. I particularly love the tablecloth on the wall. It's timely, too...did you see Martha Stewart's article this month in Living? It's all about vintage tablecloths just like the one you used.
ReplyDeleteWell done, as always. Thanks SO much for sharing the beautiful photographs. It's pure eye candy for this Texas girl.
Stunning! I love the colors you picked for the room (blue + aqua + red + pink). It's so sweet. And that chandy in the bathroom? whoa! love!

Your Friend,
Deborah
Love this! And your home of course. I think I am taking the plunge and painting it all white. Do you recommend All one color and finish for the walls and trim?
ReplyDeleteThanks ever so~
Absolutely gorgeous! I love everything about it, especially the soft colors and the doors as the headboard. You are so talented, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI feel inspired to go make something beautiful!
Wonderful, as always!!! I love the blue stripe shams - where did they come from?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely perfect.
ReplyDeleteI would move in tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the magazine-style spread. Don't be surprised if Coastal Living magazine comes calling!
I love everything about it, especially the bed! Leen did a fantastic job and the quote looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing, I am so looking forward to seeing the rest of it.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th of July girl!
I'm speechless. It's beautiful! I admire so much how you can do things with "stuff just lying around". Can't wait for more.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job! (And the magazine-style presentation was so fun.) The wall quote is gorgeous and totally non-cheesy, now I want one!

ReplyDeleteIt's all beautiful, Layla! What a perfect project for you & Kevin. Your photos are just outstanding.
ReplyDeleteLayla and Kevin.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way you described how you feel when new magazines come.
That's how I feel about your
gor ge ous post when you blog about a redo of yours.
This was a double heat beat skipper.
Love It!! geri.
That bed looks so comfy. I wish I could hop in and have a nice nap. The colors are so peaceful and cheerful and the whole room (including the bath) scream cottage! Great job, again, you guys are wizards of decorating. Now can you come to my house?
ReplyDeleteIt looks just great! Absolutely something out of a magazine! Superb job!~Patti
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Layla, as always. I especially love the wall quote. Quite clever!
ReplyDeleteLove it Layla! My bedroom has the same peaceful palette and my headboard is made from a reclaimed door...Love it all. Can't wait to see the rest of the house.
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking! I love all the colors you incorporated, and the wall words are a wonderful addition. I would love to curl up on that bed with a good "beach read" and relax after a long day of exploring the island.
ReplyDeleteI just bought a vintage California tablecloth in perfect condition for $20!!! I thought that was a great price! Now I'll have to figure out where to hang it. ;-) The room looks great! Can't wait to see the rest.
ReplyDeleteLove the lettered quoted wall! I'm a fairly new reader to your blog and it took me about 2 weeks to read through each blog you've written since the beginning and now I want to reread them all. Never enough time. Sometime can you address how you did the door headboard. Are the two doors connected - are they attached to the wall - is the bottom of the bottom door below the mattress?
ReplyDeleteA wonderful re-creation as usual! So crisp, so clean. I love it!
ReplyDeleteIt really is lovely. I do hope you post more pictures of it though. I would like to see the room as a "whole" and see where each piece of furniture sits.I appreciate the magazine shots, but would like to get an idea of what it really looks like. I don't mean to sound like a Debbie Downer....sorry! You did a beautiful job though, I love Tybee and I love your style!
ReplyDeleteFabulous room and layout. Can't wait to see the rest.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell us how you did the door headboard? Were the doors cut to fit the width of the bed, or do they just extend over the side? My doors and bed are not the same width. Thanks!
Stunningly beautiful. And that BM moonlight white looks like a must try color for me!
ReplyDeleteWow - what a vision! Layla, you are truly a talented designer! Kudos to Kevin, too!
ReplyDeleteWow...it looks amazing!! Loving that room:)
ReplyDeleteKevin and Layla - I just love your style! Can't wait to see the other rooms! I love the chippy blue item in the photo with the hook, but would love to see more of that piece. THanks!
ReplyDeleteLAYLA, JUST AS IF I'M LOOKING AT MY FAVORITE MAGAZINE, I WANT MORE!!! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MORE OF THIS CHARMING ISLAND COTTAGE!
ReplyDeleteHigh end magazine worthy, Layla! I love the softness to the room without it feeling too cold. Loads of designer elements to fuel yourself with!
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to say, your graphic design abilities are top notch. :) Thanks for the inspiring eye candy! Loved it!
Donna

Beautiful, peaceful, cottage prettiness...you've outdone yourself again.
ReplyDeleteJami
I love that Moonlight White color in the photos. Looking at an actual paint chip, it looks like a cool gray, more than white. I guess I'll have to get a sample to try, because I don't like gray tones, but I really love that color! Does it have gray tones in real life?
ReplyDeleteYou had me at Aqua......so calm.....so peaceful! I will anxiously await the future pictures of this beautiful cottage...Sherry
ReplyDeleteUmm wow. This is gorgeous. You guys did amazing!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is impressive. The quote is my favorite. I love how subtle the gold looks on the white wall. I enjoy seeing your taste & photos so much. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWarmly, Michelle
I love the quote wall. Going in my idea pile for sure! Now, the question is, do I put it in my bathroom or kitchen?
