The Crazy Cottage

Well, I finally got my closet cleaned out, and man was there a lot of stuff in there!

Here's a SMALL sampling of some of the things I discovered...

May have to open that etsy shop back up!

And imagine my surprise when I uncovered this full-size keyboard, hidden behind one of my old robes...

I forgot I even OWNED a full-size keyboard!

I'm gonna see if our niece or nephews want it- because I'm certainly not shoving that thing back in there again.

I also managed to fill one 40-gallon trash bag, and one huge box, full of clothes I can't fit into/can't imagine ever wearing again.

We brought them over to Goodwill last night and I can't tell you how good it felt to get that stuff outta the house!

Since the bedroom has become a complete and total disaster work zone in the past 48 hours, we've temporarily moved our king-sized mattress into our dining room so that we can sleep in there while we re-do the bedroom.
(What's that ya say? Where's our dining table? Why that's in the living room, next to the piano, of course.)

Having to "camp out" isn't so bad though.
The dining room is the coolest room in the house (our HVAC died earlier this year, and we have a window unit in there), and I've enjoyed waking up to a pretty blue ceiling in the morning, and having a Wonder Wall as a headboard night...

So for the time being, the dining room will act as our bedroom, and the living room will act as both our living room and our dining room.

Needless to say, it's a little crazy around the ol' cottage this week.

But we're okay with crazy.

Especially when the end result is a kick butt (keyboard-less!) closet.

  1. Isn't that the BEST feeling??? I love, love, love it! The only thing is, I have to avoid driving through the donation line, then parking and going in to look for MORE. :)

  2. I recently gave away bunches of clothing to Goodwill and it does feel nice to have less stuff in there. Nice work you two! Enjoy camping out in the dining room and cannot wait to see what you do with your master bedroom.

  3. That reminds me; I needs to load everything left over from the yard sale and haul it off to Goodwill before the week is out!

  4. Oh I can relate as I'm doing cleaning out too! I swear I keep Goodwill in business. lol

  6. Garrr, I have a little beach house just crying out for some love - www.karradaway.com.

Pity I'm in Queensland, Australia and can't get you in to help me!!!

Love your blog though, so many great ideas.

  7. You had some pretty good stuff hidden in there! I'll bet it does feel good to have it all cleared out. It's fun getting closets organized--just hard for me to keep them that way.

Thanks again for posting me on your FB and twitter - you're a doll!

  8. I LOVE cleaning out, too! It's such a good feeling. The sad thing is, the thrift shop I donate to gives you a 20% off coupon for donating. So I just go back inside and buy more stuff to replace what I got rid of. Hee! ;-)
Can't WAIT to see what you do with the MB, enjoy your little campout in the dining room!

  10. Add half a bath and I could live in your dining room!

I am watching your bedroom makeover with great interest as ours has almost the same odd layout -- each wall has something on it - door, window, old time radiator to work around.

  11. Howdy Layla! :)
I must say Kevin looks adorable in boa feathers..and pink ones at that! ROFLOL
TJ and I camp out in the living room sometime....ummm, but it's for no reason at all, just for fun. Of course our 9 year old thinks it's a hoot and camps with us. :) It's kinda fun to sleep in another room occasionally...ya know, break out of the norm! (although as I get older, my back doesn't think it's as much fun as it used to) :)
Can't wait to see what you two campers do with the master bedroom..I'm waitin' on pins and needles! :) Hey, to make your dining room campout more fun, you should go catch some fireflies and put em' in a mason jar for a night light. :) lol
    Have a great week!
    Missy :)

  12. I LOVE purging unused items and donating them (well, and selling for cash when I can too). Such a free feeling. Looking forward to seeing more.

Hubs and I slept in our living room for a short bit of time too...with the only AC unit perched out the front window. Gotta stay cool or I get real cranky.

  13. Hmm I might be totally of the bat here. But didn't you have a wonderful guest room with a double bed? Call me crazy but I would camp out there. Then again really camping out in your own house might be the nicest experience. I am about to start on my own bedroom and we will be camping out in our study, so I guess who am I to comment.
I have a-never-used-full-sized-keyboard too, but out of sheer guilt I have never forgotten about that impulse buy.
Good luck with the renovations, not that you guys need it, because you are so awesome at it. Did I mention I am totally copying your reading-room?!

  14. Yes, Marianne...but unfortunately that is currently the HOTTEST room in the house. :-P That door will remain closed til it's cool outside again!

  15. We just spent this weekend cleaning out closets! The closet under the stairs, which is located in our kitchen, was full of Tupperware. No one needs that much Tupperware! Then I used a lot of the Tupperware to further organize the pantry!

I plan on converting the closet under the stairs to a little hideout for the kids. I hope they'll love it!

Love watching the transformation of your little house that love built. :)

  17. Why is it I love watching other people clean out their closets but hate cleaning out my own? Good luck with the renovations. Love your dining room wall.

  23. Hey Ya'll! You two are the best! You make me laugh every day. And I need to laugh. I lost most everything in Hurrican Rita in 2005 and then in 2008 Lost what I had built up during Hurrican IKE. So needless to say I moved back to Kansas (where I am from) after living in TX for 29 years. I have a cute little 1 bedroom bungalow that needs some love. Mostly paint. It will take me awhile because I am on social security and don't really have the funds to fix it up like it needs to be. I miss my kids and grandkids in TX but do enjoy being back in Kansas. So keep up the good work and keep me laughing! Love ya'll Michelle Barron

  26. Can't wait to see what you do....from what I see, anyplace in your home would be a lovely place to spend the night.
    Like you attitude.

  27. Wow! I wish I had a magic closet hiding all kinds of goodies.

  28. LOVE that wonder wall...neat!! P.S. Good Luck!!

  29. You two just make me smile, well, more like smirk. Just too cute!

I had containers of clothing that remained shut for two years. Yesterday I took those babies to the GW. I didn't even ask for the containers back, I was afraid if they were opened in my presence I'd see something I couldn't part with. (That's how I keep getting into the mess to begin with)

I feel so free. If it doesn't fit in the closet on hangers or the shelves it will NOT EVER AGAIN go on the floor. I so swear.:O)

  30. We donate to Goodwill ALL the time! It feels great to get rid of stuff we don't need!...I stop to look around now & then too! ;)

  31. You two are really too much--the kind of too much we can't have too much of.

You make the world seem bigger and brighter and better.

Thanks for doing what you do the way you do it.

  32. A little bit of a mess and a little bit of crazy NEVER hurt anyone... I should know as that is my life!!!!

  33. I just sold one of those keyboards in a yard sale. We actually have a piano too, so why were we keeping it?
It's a great feeling to clear some things out, isn't it?
