Unfortunately it didn't work out between Fleamarket and Mark's dog, and the experience was stressful for Mark's wife. So the little guy is back on our back porch again today, and the search for a home for him goes on.....
Well, if you do decide to keep Fleamarket and you want an outdoor male cat there are a few things to consider. Unless he is altered, he will run away "looking for love". If he is altered, he could be run off by a bigger, meaner tom. We have had several outdoor kitties that have lived with us for a long time. The trick is, you have to lock them up at night. If you have a garage, or a shed simply lock them in there at night. That is when cats are most likely to get into trouble, or get hit by cars. If you have the cat fixed he won't run away, and if you lock him up at night he won't get run off or into fights. And honestly, locking them up every night will help them act more "dog-like". He will come when he is called b/c he knows you are going to feed him. Just my 2 cents.
oh dear ... what a calamity ... how many tales do you suppose little fleamarket is going to have in his many lives ... it's been fairly exciting so far! prairiegirl
We have had an outdoor male cat that has been neutered for 17 years!!!! Yes, that is right, 17 years. He is happy and healthy and loves his yard. It can be done!! Good luck with whatever you choose.
layla, stop fighting it ;-) some things in this case "fleamarket" are just meant to be. don't try to hide or run from your fate! ;-) greetings from germany. Iris
He's a little cutie. I wish I lived closer! I'd take him in a minute! We have a stray that all the neighbors are feeding. She won't let us bring her in. My 3 cats are really curious about her but she doesn't like them. I feel for you! It looks like he has your heart already. It is a hard thing to deal with but I know you will either keep him or you will find him a good happy home.
Have you considered him being an indoor/outdoor cat? Like he can come in to sleep at night, or go out during the day, or vice versa, whatever his habits are. That way he is not inside all the time (thus not too much additonal hair, litter, etc.,) yet he isn't completely living out in the elements? Just a thought. My sisters 4 cats are indoor/outdoor and it works fairly well. Still, get him neutered as soon as his age allows.
We adopted 2 cats last summer...or maybe they adopted us! They just showed up at our farm and we live in a very rural community. After a visit to the vet, they are both healthy and cannot reproduce. We named them Zucchini and Sasha and they live happily outdoors. They even get along with the dog that we adopted a few months after the cats arrived. Maybe you and Fleamarket are meant for each other...and Mr. LC, too!!!
Hi Layla, The stray cats that find you tend to make the best pets because they know you saved them. I hope you keep him and I agree with others get him fixed and keep him in at night. He will become a beloved pet I just know it. Jennifer
Poor little one...maybe you are meant to keep him after all???

ReplyDeleteI think he's meant to belong to you. That's why he came to your yard. It was a sign. You know you want to keep him.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a sign that he belongs in your backyard. He is just too sweet - you have to keep him!
ReplyDeleteThings happen for a REASON and maybe that reason keeps coming BACK TO YOU!!
ReplyDeleteSee? I think it might be destiny...
