Guest Bathroom Reno - Day 16

Greetings! It's very late, but I couldn't go to bed without posting the video I mentioned earlier today! I thought it would be neat to share how Kevin put the "chunky" in our new chunky shelves. :-)

Before I head to bed, I do need to mention that the pieces I called 1x3's in the video are actually 1x4's. Oops! I told you math wasn't my thing. Where's the dude in the cardigan when you need him. :-)

  1. I'm up late, too. I just want to echo what many others said several days ago. I love your blog because you are REAL. So many people (well pretty much the whole world, really) have had a rough year. And it's refreshing to read about others who've been there, and still create so much beauty. You guys are definitely something special, and quickly becoming one of my very favorite blogs. Hang in there. :-)

  2. And when you're done with those, you are welcome to come to my home and make me some....You've always wanted to visit Delaware, right?!

  3. Lands... You two are adorable. I love watching how you interact as you redo the bathroom. The shelves look awesome. Lovin' the chunky style shelving.

  4. Another great update. I am so excited to see the finished product. I am excited for you guys but also excited for me too! It is so much fun going along for the ride! Layla, I love how you always say "when I say we I mean Kevin" I do the same thing to my husband all the time.

  6. Loving watching the progress... You two just keep getting better and better with your creativity and craftsmanship.

What's the music? I will probably be embarrassed that it is someone/group I should recognize, but I am distracted by the fact that Kevin is a musician and I keep wondering if the music is his?

  9. Wendy you are too kind!
I guess we'll REALLY see about that when I have to talk in front of one that's broadcasting to 1,000,000 viewers on the 700 Club next month! Hopefully it will feel the same as it does in our little bathroom. :-)

  10. are the shelves mounted to the wall? are they mounted to the farm table? or are they just set in there? I was curious if you were taking that all out to do the floors?

  11. Wow - you must be so excited. Your bathroom is going to be awwwwwsome! Now you have me rethinking mine...again :).

Oh, and I love Kevin's checkered Vans. So very old school.

    Have a good day!

  12. Hey Chris!

The shelves are mounted to the wall, but the table slides in and out as of right now. We didn't want to try to paint around the casters at the bottom of each leg, so we will remove it when the time comes to paint those checkers!

  13. It's coming along great...I am always amazed at what y'all are willing to tackle and what you just figure out along the way! Also just had to ask...is there a "good reason" as to why you won't be doing much of the painting, layla??!! Sorry just being nosy :)

  14. Lookin' good! Can you please include some of the caulking in a future video? I know that sounds ridiculous, but I honestly don't know how to do that or what to do it to.

And thanks so much for the chunky shelf tutorial ... I always wondered how that worked!

  15. Hey Audrey!

Unfortunately I won't be able to help with projects around here until I'm caught up with my design consultations. I've been working 'round the clock to catch up, and I can finally see the finish line! Woo hoo!
I look VERY forward to getting my hands dirty again soon!

  16. Hey Marielle,

The song in this video is by John Mayer. We may use one of my bands songs sometime in the future. Thanks for asking!

  17. When it is time to caulk to mitered corners, could you please film that. We have been reno'ing (is that a word) our bathroom and I am finding those inside and outside corners to be very challenging. Please do share!

  18. Hi Layla and Kevin--

I've been a reader for some time. I come here occasionally, and I'm always glad I stopped by. I've even left a comment or two. But I want to tell you that the videos you've done on the bathroom renovation have turned me from a casual reader into a FAN! It's fun to hear your voices and see the light in your eyes. Thank you for sharing your projects with us. I'll be back; you can count on it.

  19. I love love love this bathroom - you guys amaze me. I have a question about the lights - do they plug in or did you wire them in. If they plug in, do you have to reach up that high to turn them on and off? Just wondering.

  20. You too are such an inspiration. You seem to have so much fun doing your house up together. You've given me the idea to do something similar one side of the sink in my ensuite - I wouldn't have thought of this if I hadn't seen yours first. Can't wait to see the bathroom's next stage...

  21. Hey, guys :) Looking good!!! Layla, did you mention where you were going to purchase the tiles for the sink wall? Those are such a great textural element. Love them :)

  22. I am totally loving the look it is going to be beautiful (just like the rest of your house!)!

And, will tell you from experience that a nail gun is a must!!! We didn't have one for the first three years of our projects (pounding in nail heads is the biggest pain in the world) and once we got one it was like the heavens were singing.

FYI We were able to get a deal at a big box store, a small compressor and two finish nailers for about 300.00, so if you are in the market keep your an eye out, it was a Dewalt)

Oh, and when you were talking about getting home big sheets of plywood in your compact car which is all we have too, I wanted to share our little redneck hint. They have some folding trailers at local farming stores or tool shops. They fold in half to store, and take up just a little space. But When folded out to use, they are just the size of drywall, plywood and big panelling sheets. I think it was around 300.00 as well. (you just have to put a ball hitch on your little car... But it comes off when you are not using it) This is our compromise for not owning a truck! Just thought I would tell you!

By the way thanks for becoming a follower on my blog, you TOTALLY made my day!

  23. I totally love the speed in which your husband works on the videos can he give lessons?? HAHAHA

    Amazing job!! Love your work!

  24. Great job!
I had my bathroom remodeled a few months ago and it turned out great. Looks like you guys are going to have a very wonderful new bathroom at the end of this project. Keep up the great work!

  25. We have a 1950's cottage right outside Portland, OR that we have done a lot of work on. Just wanted you to know how much we enjoy and are inspired by your blog!

  26. You ae both too cute AND VERY SMART!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. I love what you're doing! That's a lot of work...and I'm so impressed that you're doing it by yourselves.

Question- how do you turn on the Ikea lights? Are they hardwired? Or is there a switch?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Y'all are waaay tooo cute. The basket cases are coming along and that 1x2 really finishes it off. It is going to look lovely when you are done caulking, priming and painting it. Love the idea of the lights to wash down over them. Adds a little punch to what would otherwise be dark shelves; and we couldn't have that after all the time Kevin has put into them. Bless his heart for putting in all those nails without a nail gun. That's some serious love right there Layla. One day y'all will have a nailgun and Kevin will be making all kinds of stuff with it. I think him putting in each nail by hand will make you all appreciate it that much more when the bathroom is done.

  29. Hey! The bathroom is looking great, but would you please tell us all about the 700 Club engagement and how that came about? Sounds really exciting!

  30. Hey Lauren!

Here's a post I wrote about how we were contacted by the folks at The 700 Club:
    The LC on TV.

We head to Virginia Beach on December 4th. We're very excited, but there has been A LOT of planning on my part, and I hope it all comes together the way I have it in my head!

  31. Absolutely lovin' the look of the bathroom! Oh-my, how I wish we could tackle our ugly bathroom with this. There is so much else in the house we can not even begin to start on the bathroom-we will get there eventually.
We are curently painting the entire inside of the house-every wall, ceiling and trim!! I wish I painted in fast forward like Kevin!

  33. Dang girl, I wish i had the motivation to do what you do...and the money! I have a hard time with coming up with good ideas on how to build something or how to decorate, so i find myself coming to your blog to get ideas. This is on of my all time favorite blogs to come to so i sure hope you keep it up!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey Stephanee!

I know what you mean about not having the money to do projects. We couldn't do ANY of this work without the True Value giftcard we were given. The motivation comes from the promise we made to them that we'd blog about the stuff we bought there in exchange for their sweet gift!
    :-)

Gotta hold up our end of the deal!

  35. You guys are so cute! And you're doing a wonderful job. I've learned a ton from watching your videos on the bathroom redo. That's next on my list when I finish scraping the popcorn on my ceiling. Wish I were close by to help you paint that floor! Good luck!

  36. Wow! Looks really good guys! Do you have any tips on caulking? I've been doing a lot of caulking lately and can't seem to make it look good and may hands are always covered in that sticky goo! Is that normal? Can't wait to see the floor and the overall finished result - best of luck :)

  37. Get that man a nail gun!!! Sorry, I mean, that is AWESOME! :) (It really is.)

  38. I'm IN love with everything you've done! We are in the process of working on our house we just bought 2 months ago & I'm ALWAYS coming to your blog to find good ideas!

I had to laugh at the violet color of your bathroom before shots, because that was the EXACT color of the Master Bedroom when we bought it. That was one of the 1st rooms to be painted...

Quick question. I noticed all your bead board panelling is unfinished wood. I have only bought the kind that is already white. What is the difference, if any??

  39. Just found you recently, but have already come to admire you both so much. Wanted to think of something really profound to say b/c you both seem to be such great people on so many levels, but "jet" said it best so I'll just say ditto to that post. Congratulations on making your dreams come true and thanks for sharing so much with us in blogland.

  40. Hey Sarah!

Unfortunately they don't sell nail guns at our True Value. :-( And since our budget for this room is $0, Kev will just have to do it the hard way for now. I know we'll be able to get one someday...and I know it's going to be so awesome!

  41. Love the video! You'll do fine on the 700 Club!

  42. When are you 2 planning on tackling your own bedroom. I only ask...because I am putting off doing my own. I figure its that last room anyone besides hubby and I will see...if I really have to show them! LOL It's been through 3 curtain sets already, changed dressers since we bought new, and received a custom head board from a door...but since everything else in the room is sooooo...ugh-ly I hate to post any pictures of it. Good luck, personally the bedroom has been the hardest for me.
