I can't believe I am the first to comment on your new guest bathroom post. I love watching your progress from start to finish in almost real time.
ReplyDeleteI love the tile. It reminds me of the marble hand cut tiles from the 30-40's. Just timeless style.
You are both very brave to let the world watch as you learn how to rehab. My husband and I love to work on the house together. We are working on our 3rd and we have been together almost 30 years, we met very young. We are not brave enough to post videos of ourselves but I wish we had them.
Continued good luck with the bathroom. I will be watching.
Traci
Enjoying your videos! You guys are so charming. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

ReplyDeleteOmG! Is it true about the caulk on your hands?? I just recently recaulked my bath (which I am not very good at, by the way) and I hated every minute of it! I had caulk all over me and the sink.Wait, I think I am not feeling so good... No really awesome idea with the gloves, wish I had thought of that!!
ReplyDeleteOh I forgot to add... I LOVE that tile. Wish I had a place to use it! YOu guys are awesome!

ReplyDeleteYou two are the cutest things on the internet...you need your own show! Where are these talent scouts? I am loving the bathroom and your can do attitude!
ReplyDeleteHi~Your bathroom is going to be absolutely gorgeous! I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI just thought I'd pass along a handy tip for caulking. My dad showed me how to do this and I was skeptical at the time. Instead of using your finger to smooth it out, use a damp sponge. Keep a bucket of water handy so you can rinse the sponge. It's super easy (easier than using my finger, I thought. But then, I'm not the most careful person in the world, either.) and you get the best finish in the world! Please understand that I'm not criticizing the work you've done~it looks great! It's just so much easier to use the sponge. And faster.
GORGEOUS!!! I used either a very similar or the exact same marble tile around our fireplace facade and it is STUNNING in person. Every person who sees it loves getting up close to check out all the colors.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be one amazing room!
Bathroom reno looks great! Is it just me or does Layla look preggers? Seems to be a rash of that lately :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, thank you for the caulking tips!!! I'm not sure why I did not think to use rubber gloves before, but I have a HUGE box of them now - great tip! It's also good to know that I can just paint over the excess caulk that gets on either side of the corner, I thought I had to get that all off before painting - you've saved me about a million hours! Best of luck as you get closer to the finish line! :)
ReplyDeleteHey Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI guess that means I should stop wearing shirts with empire waists.
Which totally STINKS, 'cause I LOVE them!
No buns in the oven over here.
:-)
Layla
So, so funny!
ReplyDeleteIt is so great to see a couple with so much in common, who compliment each other, who goof together and entertain the world as they do it. It is a delight to watch your videos, this one made me laugh out loud a few times (the patting of his head and picking of his nose...oh. my. word. so funny.) and really brightened my day.
thanks for sharing your life and bathroom~
Oh my gosh - You two could not be cuter. And I'm not lusting after your husband here (I promise), but I've got to get me a Kevin. You two together are everything I want in a relationship. Thanks for giving me hope.
ReplyDeleteOh, and the bathroom is looking awesome. Way.to.go.
You guys are seriously amazing and way too cute! I cannot believe that my husband and I cannot even get our acts together to paint a bathroom much less re-do one! You guys are very inspiring! Love it!
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom is looking great!!
ReplyDeleteI have just finished caulking our apartment block - 1000 feet of baseboards - and I have a few comments. You will waste alot less material if you don't cut the end off so close to the cartridge. It will look like you don't have a big enough bead on the wall but when you smooth it out it will be perfect. Also wearing gloves - probably latex - won't make any difference in the amount of VOC's or other chemicals that get into your body. Most of these chemicals are inhaled when the compound off gasses. You would do better to wear an approved mask - not a paper one. Better for you and any further children! All the best - Wendy
I am becoming addicted to your videos...too CUTE!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat progress you guys !!!
I want to extend warm wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving...I won't be blogging much this week but will look forward to catching up when I return...
All the best,
Kathy :)
ps those tops are adorable...you don't look preggers :)
mr. palmer is so patient! i cannot imagine my husband bearing with me through a 22 minute project, much less 22 days! :) it is looking great yall!
ReplyDeleteps- i giggle every time yall say caulk. how can you keep a straight face? ok- getting my mind out of the gutter now.
Hey Kevin and Layla! I have a quick hint for Kevin and the caulk gun if he doesn't alread know it. If you will just turn the bent metal part at the back of the gun, releasing the pressure, it won't make piles of unwanted caulk all over the place. You just turn it back when you're ready to use it again. :) I have saved countless amounts of caulk doing that. Boy did I use to make a mess! :) Lovin the bathroom, by the way! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the basketcases and the beadboard. I'm in desperate need of re-doing my master bath and am gleaning ideas from you. :) Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words and the great caulking tips!
ReplyDeleteI will be trying them out very soon!
Kev
Can't wait to see it!!! I'm having "sanding issues" with mine. I love the tile you chose and can't wait to see everything all pulled together!
ReplyDeleteHave a great Thanksgiving week!
Roeshel
Layla, before I get way off the current subject here, the bathroom is coming along beautifully. Then again, I'm sure you didn't need me telling you that. ;) I'm obsessed with that tile! Can't wait to use some of your ideas in my own home.
ReplyDeleteNow on to other things... am I needing a stronger prescription in my contacts or am I missing the lettered olive somewhere?!?! I think that "twinkle twinkle little star" piece might be just the inspiration I needed for my little mans room. Especially considering EVERY star he sees he says, out loud, "starfish, mama. starfish". *I know, he makes the gloomiest of days brighter for me.* :) Well, let me know where I can find it. Please. ...and thank you.
I just love your videos. Always so entertaining (and informative of course!) :-) I love the "basketcases" and your new tile. So much fun to see it all coming together. I have to say, selfishly, I wish you were trying out for Design Star because I think you would be awesome on the show, but I understand it's a big commitment, too. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hey Amanda!
ReplyDeleteI never ended up launching LetteredOlive.com, and unfortunately the Quoteboxes were just too time consuming and expensive to make.
I sold the "Twinkle, Twinkle" box to a reader a while back- but I don't think Kevin will ever let me sell the "Follow Your Heart" one! :-)
Layla
So excited for you guys!!! It's looking so great and those tiles are perfect.
ReplyDeleteYou're so funny - I thought the part with you patting Kevin's head was hilarious :)
BTW, what's Kevin's right upper arm say?
XO,
Jacci
layla, this is coming along so well and I love the tile you chose, what a deal, it looks like tumbled marble,it is perfect. While watching your video all I could think of is how much fun you and Kevin will have watching this when you get old and gray. I have been married to my sweetheart for forty years now and I would love to have our lives captured on film. Sweet memories you are making. Kathysue
ReplyDeleteI'm no caulk expert, but I am OCD about the way it looks in my house & THANKFULLY my husband worked for a painter for years. I don't know if you've ever tried this, but my hubby uses a big slightly damp sponge(instead of his fingers)to smooth out the caulk & it looks SOOOOO good & even...no little pieces that don't smooth out. Yours looks great from what I saw in the video, but just thought I'd throw that suggestion your way.
ReplyDeletePS. They have waterproof caulk which my brother just used on an entry table & he used it, because he thought it might get dirty & I'd want to clean it. BUT...we found out that waterproof caulk is not paintable. oops!:)
PSS. I promise I'm going to end this novel...but just wanted you to know the bathroom is looking AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! ...and Layla...you DON'T look prego!

YOU ARE HERE!
LOVE the tile! You guys Rock!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the way the guest bathroom is looking and can't wait to see the finished project. I agree with several others here...you two need your own HGTV show for sure! I think I've seen all the House Hunters I can stand.
ReplyDeleteLove love love that tile, anticipating the outcome of all of the loveliness!!
ReplyDeleteI live for Guest Bathroom Reno updates and appearances by Kevin "These Guns Are Awesome" Palmer, but ever since you guys switched to Vimeo for your video updates...well, let's just say, my Mac and Vimeo no likey. :(
ReplyDeleteWould you consider going back to your previous video platform, if I ask reeeeeeeeally nice? Please?
Wow, that was a GREAT deal on the tile. I think the mosiac I used from Lowes for our tub was $10 a sheet. That's crazy good!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are doing an amazing job and keeping me motivation on the work my husband and I are doing on our house. Thanks for being so entertaining and showing all your great ideas. We are kind of thinking of the table thing in our bathroom now when we had no clue what we were going to do. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteHi there Earth Mother,
ReplyDeleteI'm going to get that done for you and any other readers that can't view vimeo. Thanks for stopping by and letting me know!
I hope you all have a great week!
Kevin
Loving how the bathroom is turning out! Such a happy little space.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of tips that might help you out.
Firstly, I learned this from a painter friend of mine. When caulking use a dampened cloth or paper towel (I like paper towel) wrapped around your finger when you wipe the caulk away. It makes a perfect caulk line and cleans up the caulk your pulling away nicely. (It works really well for when you are caulking around the sink-you don't get big caulk streaks)plus your hands will still be safely covered to save yourself from those pesky chemicals that Layla is worried about ;).
Secondly, if you cut the caulk tip at a little more of an angle you can really rest your tip in the crevice your working in and not as much caulk will come out (aka wasted caulk).
Thirdly, (whew) I can help with your tiling if you need advise. My hubs did flooring work for years and we retiled our kitchen so I've been around that block a time or two. Just email me.
Good luck. Again, looks amazing!
I just had a chance to watch the video. You two crack me up! :)
ReplyDeleteThe bathroom is looking beautiful!
R
Kevin,
ReplyDeleteCut a smaller hole in the tip of the caulk tube and less will come out-

I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.
