One of my favorite parts of Coastal Living is "Lindsay's View".
Lindsay is the editor-in-chief of Coastal Living and he has the most incredible way with words. It's always such a treat to read his stories.
There was something extra special about one of the paragraphs he wrote in this months "View".
It says,
"The evening after my interview, I wandered from my room to the water's edge, and for the first time in my adult life I felt like the person I truly wanted to be: unguarded, imperturbable, utterly content. I don't know about you, but wherever and whenever I'm gazing at the shore in the half-light, I vow to hold on to that feeling of peace and carry it with me always."
I really connected with his message because I find myself vowing to do that very same thing every time I stand before the sea and watch the waves dance with the sand.
One day, I hope to live a little closer to the ocean- in a tiny timeworn cottage that smells like summer and feels like freedom.
The February issue of Coastal Living is filled with lots of photos of beautiful, beachside abodes.
On page 36, you will find a house made of shells and stones...
There's a story about an open-air villa on page 68...
And on page 86, you'll find an article titled, "Haven on Earth"...
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about all three places, and it made me look forward to visiting Tybee Island even more!
"Just Beachy" on Tybee Island, Georgia
I'll sign off with one of my favorite sea-inspired quotes...
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
Hope you're having a great weekend!

Oh that is one of my favourite quotes, too. My husband loves sailing and I gave him a painting of a boat on the ocean one year for Christmas and wrote that quotation on the back.

ReplyDeleteI would love to live by the sea or just near the water as well. Love the bedroom image and the inspirational quote - so true.
ReplyDeleteAw, your post made me feel all warm and fuzzy! I completely share your thoughts of the ocean...
ReplyDeleteKelly
omg, I have to go get it, I love the Haven on earth kitchen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting about it.

I connected to this post because I was raised on the Oregon coast. Sometimes I would head to the beach and watch the sun rise. Sometimes it was so foggy that you couldn't see the ocean and then it would appear out of the mist. So peaceful! I miss it all the time! You should live at the beach someday...its wonderful!
ReplyDeleteHello Layla,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you for leaving me such a sweet comment on my blog!! You made my day! Love all the beach photos. I just love that magazine.
I have been lucky enough to live on the Hollister Ranch (here in California) for a year. We were dirt poor at the time. My husband was cowboying for the ranch on a very small income. It might not have been the most ideal time of our life. But did it ever feel like heaven living by the beach. I treasured every day that we got to live there!
Take Care,
Maria
p.s. I had to have my sister check out your last post on your ceiling redo. I think that has to be my favorite post. I was still chuckling to myself today about it. That was great! LOVED IT so did my sister.
Ooh, that just made me want spring to come even more, all those "beachy" words and homes! It also made me want to subscribe to Coastal Living...
ReplyDeletethe open air villa with the blue beds next to each other are to DIE for!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that inspiring quote.
ReplyDeleteI needed that saying today....thanks :)
ReplyDeleteYou know how you start to doubt yourself, or the things you're doing, wondering if you're dreams are ever going to be fulfilled? Well that saying just let me know I'm doing alright and to just keep dreaming. :)
You've made me want to take another look at Coastal Living. I've seen it many times, but somehow missed reading those articles. You are right, he does indeeed have a way with words.
ReplyDeleteAnd so do you. You're posts are always thought provoking and meaningful, regardless of the topic. Yet another great post.
Wow, how great are those lights above the kitchen island in the Haven on Earth article?? Love them. I can't get that magazine here so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThose beds in blue and white are HEAVENLY!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to look through it. I love the blue and white villa interior!

Layla.
ReplyDeleteYou are so wise beyond your years.
Life is truly about no regrets, making memories, and having the love of your life, friends and family to share your experiences with.
I also loved Savannah and can't wait one day to visit Tybee Island.
Have you ever heard or been too Block Island, in R.I.
That is truly a piece of heaven that keeps your soul singing for the whole year after a visit.
Have a lovely Sunday. geri.
Oh, to dream of a life on the beach. Thanks for sharing such beautiful pictures. I could almost feel the sun on my skin. And I just love your quote. Truer words have never been spoken.
ReplyDeleteIf you're lucky enough to live near the sea...you're lucky enough!
ReplyDeleteI loved this issue. Thank you for your beautiful review.
Deborah
a lucky one
I just subscribed to CL - this made me even more excited to get my first issue!
ReplyDeleteI would so love to live by the ocean.... instead I am in Kansas... someday!
This is my most favorite magazine. I have all the copies of it and can't bring myself to part with them. I just have a true love affair with Coastal Living.

ReplyDeleteI can so relate. Ive moved to the coast now and feel exactly like this. While I cant look out my window to see it, its just down the street. Theres something different in the air near the coast and I just love it.
Love that other quote too. :)
That Coastal Living bedroom prompted me to redo my own. I am loving it! Can't wait to see the reading room ...hopefully this week. :)
ReplyDeleteThis post was just what I needed! I don't want to live with the regrets of what I didn't do. Thank you! ☺ Celeste
ReplyDeleteLovely! This blog is so inspiring ~ and living on the water makes it that much more enjoyable.
ReplyDeletelove coastal living magazine and am always inspired by the beautiful homes and decor that are featured within their luscious pages.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the creative freedom featured - ie. a house made of stones and shells!!
Thanks for bringing a sunny smile to my winterized face :)
Layla, that was a warm and wonderful post. There is something so primal about the sea that it can't help but speak to your heart. If you ever have time, check out WATERSIDE COTTAGES by Barbara Jacksier. It's a book full of cottage eye candy. 2 of my friends have homes in their one is "...by the beautiful sea." and the other is "the white house". When we go to the beach we stay with our friends in the beautiful sea home and it is truly soul-soothing.
ReplyDeleteMy mom gets my sister and I a magazine every year and this year I asked for Coastal Living because of the fabulous stuff you've posted about it. I hope it comes soon! Can't wait! I lived for 6 months one summer in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where I fell in love with the ocean, and one day I also will have a tiny cottage by the sea! Although, there is something to be said about "Amber Waves of Grain." The wheat fields here in Eastern Washington where I grew up and live are just about as beautiful as the ocean.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely quote and timely reminder!
ReplyDeleteCome enjoy the sunset on the Pacific ocean...that's what my today's post was...and there are others, you might like moon over the ocean. As the ocean is right outside so it figures largely in my pictures.
ReplyDeleteIt has been so fun to watch you build your self employed creative realm. I appreciate the vulnerability you continue to share as well.
Just had to say "thank you" for all the information in the Space Planning section of your book, Layla. So helpful, especially the part about two axis, in order to balance an asymmetrical focal point/room. I had never even heard of this method, but it is the answer for one of my main rooms--exactly like you said, I knew something wasn't quite right, but what, and why? Now I know and can fix the problem! Yay!
