Here's what's been happening in the reading room over the past couple of days...
Next up- crown molding and the new light fixture.
I can't wait!
:-)
I'll be back soon with more photos and video of it all put together.
In the meantime, happy Friday!
Layla
PS...For those that asked about the guest bathroom reno, well, Mr.Kevin needed a little breaky-break from it. There's no natural light in there, and the lack of sunlight was really starting to get to him- so he's only been working on projects in rooms that have windows lately. That's kinda how we roll. When we start to feel tired or overwhelmed by something, we just move on to something else. We've got a plethora of projects left to tackle around here, and since renovating our house has become Kevin's full-time job, and blogging about it has become mine, it's important for us to try to keep our heads happy while we document our reno adventures and make this house our home.
:-)
But don't worry, I'm sure we'll both get antsy to finish it eventually!
oh i'm so excited to
ReplyDeletesee the finished product.
nice job kevin!
You guys are so AWESOME. I just love this video. You made it look so fun. How exciting is that to find wood underneath the drywall. I can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteTake Care,
Maria
Such a fun way to share with all of us!
This is so neat, I'm more excited than if it were my own wood planked dream. Most likely cause I don't have to do the work...
ReplyDeleteNice job!
What a great surprise to find beautiful wood under that plaster. The only thing we found under plaster is more plaster.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work.
Such an improvement.
ReplyDeleteKelly
I just can't imagine anyone covering up that beautiful ceiling in the first place! Bless you both for undercovering her and leting her see the light of day again! :) Can't wait to see the finished room........I'm sure you can't wait either! LOL I know you're excited to get those shutters up too! :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic project. Your reading room is my favourite room in your home. It's so cozy.
ReplyDeleteBTW.... when are you coming to my house? It's only a hop, skip and a jump to Toronto, Canada right? LOL.
Keep up the good work.... you're an inspiration.
Layla & Kevin
ReplyDelete"I need me some of those".
Still working on getting my older half to do bead board over the popcorn to get the look.
Love your vision and HUGE energy.
How many people get to say they love their full time jobs.Have more fun. geri.
It looks so easy when he's doing it. Makes me want to start a project.....nah. I'll think about that tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteY'all have a great weekend.
Ah the joys of home ownership. There is ALWAYS something to do.
ReplyDeleteI have place a link to your site on my blog today. I hope you will stop by.
Looks better already. Thanks for posting the video. Can't wait to see it finished!
ReplyDeleteand so it goes...lol, home renos never end . They seem to cause the domino effect in other rooms.
ReplyDeleteY'all are so cute. Kevin, love your sense of humor. The music rocks...and so funny to hear that Kevin is listening to books on his ear buds.
I just love the exposed tongue and grove. It really opens your home and bounces lots of light.
Hi Layla and Kevin. I have been reading your blog for a while...but am just now commenting...I know, LAME :) Anyway, we have a new home, that we built to look like a turn of the century home. We don't have the reno part of the fun, but our list of to-do's never seems to end. It's great that y'all have each other to be partners in crime....y'all make it all so much fun. Thanks for sharing your adventures and for being so inspirational!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing! Can't wait to see it all finished!
ReplyDeleteLoved watching the video!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to see the results! Yay!
ReplyDeleteremodeling and blogging, visiting interesting houses, being featured in a magazine here and there, little projects for sponsors -- you guys are creating a great life. I'm enjoying the journey.
ReplyDeleteI love how Kevin says "ceilin" with his cute accent! You guys are soo adventurous. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI always love your videos! That ceiling is going to make my favorite room ever (YOUR reading room) even more gorgeous if that's possible! BTW, it's still snowing here so if you want some more I'd send you this storm if I could!
ReplyDelete;-) I'm so ready for spring, I bought myself daffodils yesterday at the grocery! LOL
You guys are awesome!
ReplyDeleteYour videos are just great! You guys should be on a show! I laughed right out loud when Kevin held the lightbulb over his head! Great job and the ceiling looks great! Do you guys want to come work at my house, too? Ha!
ReplyDeleteYa'll are so lucky to just be able to pull that ceiling down and have that beautiful wood under it!!!! VERY LUCKY!
ReplyDeleteYou two are just amazing and so lucky to have that ceiling! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteKristin
I just can't help but think what a perfect coincedent it is that you all just happened to have all that gorgeous wood hiding in your ceilings and you guys are working to make your house really stand out. It gives your rooms such a great look, people will surely want to repeat it. While hubs and I were in the house design/build business, we would put wood on the ceilings in some of the rooms and it always had a great effect, but yours is the real thing which makes it that much cooler!
ReplyDelete☺ Celeste
nice. :D
ReplyDeleteOkay, I LOVE the idea of a beautiful painted wood ceiling but I have a question: when you pull the drywall ceiling down, how do you keep it from destroying the wall edges where the wall and ceiling meet?? and do you just count on crown molding to cover all that up??
ReplyDeleteLoved the video and the gorgeous ceiling! How lucky to find that hidden gem! I can't wait to see what it looks like when you are finished. It is my favorite room in your house! Have a great weekend. : )
ReplyDeleteHealth and happiness to you both,
Angela
You two are the best renovators out there in blogger-space! I love the tutorials, videos, pics, etc. I want my blog to grow up and be just like yours! Love the ceiling-how could someone cover up that gorgeous wood!? We have an 1829 farmhouse and just uncovered pine planking in the kitchen...LOVE it. Hmmm...i'm now wondering if there's wood under those ceilings of ours. I know there's at least lathe & plaster...haha
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!

That is fascinating that there was wood under your drywall. How old is your house if you don't mind me asking? I am so excited to see this space finished. What a cozy place it will be.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that you have planks throughout your home. It makes me wonder if this was the original finish and someone in time decided to plaster over it.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are exposing it. I LOVE the look.
Thanks for joining in my exchange You have mail!
Deborah
How lucky you are to have the wood underneath the drywall - I love it. Love the white - it's already beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMarsha
I'll just come out and say it. I'm jealous of your ceilings. It looks great!
ReplyDeleteI pink puffy heart that Kevin listens to audio books on his iPod. That gave me a serious blog-crush on him! Boys who read (or listen to) books are hot! ;)
ReplyDeleteWOW-that Kevin is a FAST Painter! ;) The ceiling looks great, I LOVE the look. Are you having to add insulation in the attic to counter balance the lack of air blockage (that's a technical term) through the spaces between the boards?
ReplyDeleteYou guys are absolutely fearless!
Wow ... fast work Kevin.
ReplyDeleteLove the boards and now you also have higher ceilings too
Thanks so much for posting the video! I'm working on a hundred year old home over on the west coast. We've found out that not only are our ceilings planked, but most of our walls, too. Now we just have to find the time to tear everything down. Any words of wisdom?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Beth from the Seattle area
Your videos always make me smile :)
ReplyDeleteGreat video!!! Can't wait to see more
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! Can't wait to see the finished project! I want a reading room now :)
ReplyDeleteI've been lurking here for months and had to stop and let you guys know what a great job you do everyday with this blog. I enjoy watching you both and your projects. I have been doing my own projects in our total renovation of a 1902 farmhouse in Pennsylvania for the past 5 years. Lemme know if you're interested in seeing my work!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to let know that for the trim work, there is nothing better than a Paslode trim nailer. We got ours 7 years ago on eBay. Best purchase even made. It is a cordless trim nailer. Makes life so much better. Check it out. And thank you for your blog. It's one of my favorites!
As I type this my dh is remodeling our little kitchen from our 1925 built home.
ReplyDeleteI read daily but only occasionally comment, but I have to tell you two...your amazing. You remind me of myself and dh about 30 years earlier. We have been remodeling homes for 43 years.
Love your fearlessness Kevin as you go about demo and Layla, such wonderful decorating ideas and vision.
Keep em coming
I just discovered you guys-"where have I been!!"
ReplyDeleteLove what your doing, your videos are just brilliant and fun. I am new to the blogging world and am just blown away by how talented you are and your spare room I WANT!
Anyways keep up the great work

So cool! Thanks for sharing! can't wait to see it when it's complete!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to know I am not the only HALF and HALF TEA drinker from McDonald's!!! I cracked up when he said that. I always order half and half and light on the ice. The workers used to look at me like I was from Mars but now they've got it down to a "TEA" (sorry, couldn't help myself). Cheers Kevin!
ReplyDeleteThanks for answering the question about how you knew there was wood under there... I was 90% sure we had wood underneath (or above?) or ceilings since our house was built in 1912... but now we are 100% sure! :)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished product! I leave feeling so inspired each time I visit this blog. Thanks!! :)
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Oh, you're so lucky to have that wood under the cottage cheese. I'm sure it will look beautiful when you're done.
ReplyDeleteThat was a great video. Can't wait to see what comes next. If you're ever in NC and want a some reno work, my kitchen would love a visit from you! :) (jk)

I can't believe that beautiful wood was covered up! It turned out great! Can't wait to see it finished. Thanks for the video! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Simply wow! That is so cool!! Surely a lot of work, but you make it look so fun and easy. Maybe I'll share the video with my hubby to see if I can inspire him to get started on my "list" this weekend!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see it all finished and fabulous....
That makes me so MAD that whoever-it-was covered up that beautiful wood! I mean, REALLY? Glad y'all are uncovering it. :-)
ReplyDeleteCannot wait to see the finished product!!!
ReplyDeleteI truly wish Kevin could come talk to my husband and tell him how fun reno projects really are. So if y'all are ever in NC let us know and we'll buy you dinner and we'll chat about how fun renovations really are. :)
You two are just so much fun to watch! I've been so inspired by TLC and will be tackling hanging beadboard this weekend.
Happy Weekend!
Layla And Kevin,
ReplyDeleteyou make me smile..
Love you guys!
Loreli
We kinda roll the same way 'round here, we've got unfinished projects from october '08! (namely, the kitchen ceiling where we took down a wall and opened up the kitchen to the whole house) but I'm not complainin' :)
Hey we work like that too, its the best way to be. Mind you sometimes we get used to somethings not being finished that we never get back to it!!

THANK YOU for showing this by video! Being able to see the details (like how much to worry about ragged edges of where the ceiling used to meet the wall, what tools to use, how to use them, ETC) is invaluable! You guys ROCK!
ReplyDeleteKevin and Layla, You two are just too adorable! I love this video. The room is going to be beautiful! What a treasure it will be for the two of you to watch these videos together years from now! Layla, I wish our hubbies could meet. They would certainly hit it off. Just like I said at Blissdom, they are so much alike in their work ethic!
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed weekend.
Traci
Love the look of it Layla, and Kevin's doing a great job! I'm curious though about the efficiency of heat and a/c with ceilings and walls that are like that? Wouldn't you lose a lot of heat and a/c through the gaps to the attic?
ReplyDeleteIt looks AWESOME, Layla and Kevin! I don't know why anyone would cover up such a gorgeous ceiling to begin with...Why?!?!
ReplyDeleteSo cute about Kevin listening to audio books ...that's exactly what Jeff listens to when he's working! Myself, I could never be able to process it all while working, lol. don't know how they do it!
Wow, thats difficult to have to go back and tear down something after the rooms look sooo pretty..Good job guys! Can't wait to see the finished projecto! ~lulu
ReplyDeleteLayla - I hope you gave Kevin a neck massage that evening! It sure does give you tight neck and shoulder muscles when you have to work on ceilings!
ReplyDeleteIt's all worth it though. It looks fantastic!
Hey Layla,
ReplyDeleteIve been a follower for a while and really enjoy what you do. I think I fell in love as soon as I saw your kitchen. At any rate as I watched this video I wanted to let you know of a tool that has saved my life or at least my back. It's called a paint-mate. It rocks for painting ceilings and walls of course. But basically you load the long handle of the roller with paint and pump paint into the roller as you go. So there is less going to the can and like I said it's awesome with ceiling painting. I think it cost me like 20 bucks. Happy painting can't wait to see the finished project!!!
You two are so adorable:) I'm so excited to see it all finished!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I just wanted to let you know I'm having my first giveaway if you'd like to come check it out:)
Hope you're having a wonderful and productive weekend!
Love it! I also love that Mr LC listens to audio books while ripping down drywall!
ReplyDeleteHiya
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what the age of your house is? Was it customary to put up planks on the ceiling to mount drywall or is the house so old that it was they way it was before drywall?
