While I finalize the design plan for our master bedroom, Kevin is putting the finishing touches on our latest dining room reno project.
We didn't really mean for it to turn into such a big project.
It just sorta....happened.
The original plan was to simply remove the drywall from the ceiling, expose and paint the wood ceiling hidden underneath the drywall, and hang a new light fixture.
So Kevin broke out the hammer and tack strip remover thingy and went to town on the ceiling one day a couple of weeks ago...
Oops.
Wrong video.
Here it is...
...and when we finished painting the ceiling and installing the crown molding, we replaced the light that's donned our dining room ceiling for the past three years...
...with one that's a little more...us!
It only cost about $75 bucks to make, and it was super easy to put together.
Here are the links to the products I used:
- Chandelier
- Jute Trim
- Shades
We also had our electrician friend install a couple of wall washer lights on the ceiling above our new "wonder wall".
(You know, the one with the hidden doorway in it.)
More about that project soon!
PS...The paint color on the dining room ceiling is "Sea Salt" available at Sherwin Williams.

I love Max...I think he needs to do a post now and then. Don't you ever wonder what in the world he must be thinking with all this crazy construction going on around him all the time!?
ReplyDeleteLoving what I see here...it looks quite awesome. But I think Kevin needs a new mask. ;o)
~mary~
The light looks great!
ReplyDeleteThese little teasers for your dining room are driving me crazy! :) I can't wait to see the whole thing! Love, love, LOVE your blog!
ReplyDeleteOMG. Max's paw on the camera at the end had me cracking up. Hilarious! Gorgeous chandelier!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Could you stand back and give us a view of the whole dining room now? Loving it!
ReplyDeleteI can tell this is going to be wonderful.
ReplyDeleteTotally awesome! I'm going to have to copy this for sure!
ReplyDeleteYou Rock! You have inspired me to get rid of some of my "model home" lighting. I have really been trying to find something for our master bath and I think this is it.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love the light! I'm dying to see the master bedroom. I keep checking and hoping that you'll give us a peek or share some details. The suspense is killin' me!
ReplyDeleteI love the light and the colour of paint on the wall behind... really great colour. Sigh. I feel a need to re-paint some walls at home coming on...
ReplyDeleteLady it's gorgeous!! That trim is rockin' my world! Yet again...I NEED to go to Ikea!!!
ReplyDeleteThe chandalier looks much better as an actual light fixture than as an iron octopus coming out of a box like it did in the video of the post before! It looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteIt IS perfect! The ceiling and light go together so well.
ReplyDeleteMax is such a little cutie!
☺ Celeste
It's looking great. I totally understand how projects snowball. You work on one tiny project and the next thing you know, you're redecorating your entire home. It's an illness (and I'm glad you suffer from it.) :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!
ReplyDeleteYou nailed it!!! WOW!
ReplyDeletem ^..^
Seriously cute you both are....and the wild dingo too! Love the new ceiling and lamp!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! I came here from my daughter's blog, The Virginia House.

I can't wait to see the reveal!!
ReplyDeleteThe chandelier looks great! You did a wonderful job..

Great Job! I bought the same little shades before Christmas to replace the black shades on the silvery, 10-light fixture in our "sitting room" (former dining room). I've been starring at it now and again since then, trying to figure what else needed to "happen"......now I know! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAre you still doing consults or is there too much going on? I just stripped our guest room and repainted. I change the look. There's this neat old "thingie" that you used to hitch a team of horses together that we have had for YEARS...I haven't figured how to use it, but I'm thinking about using it as a "rod" for the window treatment. My Kevin thinks it will look, well, less than good. If you're still consulting, I wanted to send you some shots and see if you have any ideas.
Again, NICE job!
Layla and Kevin.
ReplyDeleteHow do you do it?????
I Love the light fixture, but even more love the ceiling.
Was there alot of fixing up the ceiling before it looks like it does now?
Piecing in wood, sanding down, filling with wood putty.
It is GREEEEEEEAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT!
Wishing you a Happy day. geri
That is one great makeover. I love that you got the look you wanted for so much less. That is what I try to do.
ReplyDeleteI'm adding you to my favorite blogs.
Have a great day.
So glad you liked my slipcover.
Rosemary
LOVE that chandelier.
ReplyDeleteoooh! Love it!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. That's the perfect description for this renovation. From the great cost-saving ideas to the funny videos, you guys really inspire me and entertain me. Thanks So much!
ReplyDeleteThanks, also, for the sources you share. I ordered the beadboard wallpaper you showed in a previous post and made our weekend house cabinets look exactly like I wanted them to! After they were painted, you couldn't even tell it wasn't real beadboard!
And I've ordered some decals for some old ironstone platters I have. Leen, the Graphics Queen, is charming and lovely.
Any, thanks for everything! I must be your biggest fan.
I'm soooo tempted to rip off the drywall on my own ceilings! Your exposed woodwork is so cool! Nice work on the chandy. :)

Ooo... jealous much.
ReplyDeleteGreat work on the chandy.
It totally makes the biggest difference!
How much am I WISHING that I had some old wood planks to expose in MY House???
We just have to add them... :)

As always... totally inspired.

looks so great already. Can't wait to see the secret door.
ReplyDeleteThe ceiling looks A-Maz-ing. Do you just love it? I'm really digging your chandy, too. Great job on the Pottery Barn look-alike.
ReplyDelete-Gail
It turned out fantastic! Thanks for sharing the links for the jute trim...I will be ordering some to match my PB shades!!
ReplyDeleteYour chandelier transformation is a keeper. I picked a similar one up myself several years ago at JCPenney on sale (clearance) for $40 (including shades!) and I'm just waiting until I find a house to use it it when I relocate in a few months. Great tip on the jute trim, too. They add the perfect touch. (And the best parts of the video were the appearances from Max, of course...what a cool little doggie he is!)
ReplyDeleteWow, what a transformation! The orange walls were a bit much (don't get me wrong, I LOVE orange). It looks so much better now. And I adore your PB knock-off chandelier, totally doable and even more gorgeous!! You are so crafty!
ReplyDeletewow Layla, I haven't been here in awhile...when did you paint the kitchen cabinets white? awesome all around...
ReplyDeletei love it, i can't wait to see more of the finished room!
ReplyDeleteThat jute trim is perfect! I'm going to have to remember it for future projects.
ReplyDeleteEmily
It's beautiful!! Your ceiling is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to watch this blog, because we've moved into a fixer upper too, and I do get stuck for ideas. I love what you've done!
ReplyDeleteLove the ceiling and your beautiful new light for the dining room. Everything looks great! Love & blessings from NC!
ReplyDeleteI love the jute trim around the shades..i've been thinking about trying to re-crate the pillows with the jute trim around them from pottery barn....you inspire me to create new things all the time! keep it up!
ReplyDeletegreat job and what a bargain!
ReplyDeleteif your readers are interested, i am having a designer challenge over at my blog. http://theshinypebble.blogspot.com
~WOW! That is just beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteVery pottery Barnesque! Well done again.
ReplyDeleteI think the light fixture turned out better than the one from Pottery Barn (I can't believe I just said that -- I love PB) :O) My husband read your hubby's past post on adding molding to old oak cabinets -- VERY helpful! May I have your permission to use your after-shots of your black-then-white kitchen for inspriration on my blog? You two ROCK! :O)Gina
ReplyDeletebrilliant! love projects like this. smart smart smart!
ReplyDeleteI love it! And it really adds to the room!
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously just floored at how creative you are! This is awesome. Also, how did you do that ceiling? i LOVE it! I guess I need to keep reading through your archives :)
