Meet the Cottage, Name the Cottage

Photobucket
After a pit stop for groceries at Walmart (and Publix!) in Savannah, we rolled onto Tybee Island around 6:00 Monday night.

The weather was absolutely perfect, and the atmosphere was just as refreshing as I remember it being.

Photobucket

And even though we were some three hundred miles away from our Lettered Cottage, we both felt incredibly "at home".

Photobucket

Tybee has a way of making a person feel that way.
From the friendly stray "island kitties" lounging amongst the shady ferns, to the cheery colorful cottages sprinkled here and there and everywhere, to the clusters of kiddos biking their way from one side of the island to the other- you just can't help but feel comfortable here.

While the painters finish up at the Mess Hall, we're temporarily staying at a cottage called Key Lime Parrot.
It's a sunny little house, (decorated by my friend Jane) located just 2 blocks from the beach.

After we got our groceries and luggage moved into the house on Monday night, we drove over to The Crab Shack and dined bay side, under the stars.
Kevin's not a seafood guy, so we ate barbecue and "smashed taters" instead.
It was delicious!
We sipped on Corona's with lime, and talked 'til we were too tired to talk anymore.

It was a pretty long day, so we made our way back to "The Parrot" and called it a night.

Ahhhhhh.....nothin' like sleeping by the sea.

Yesterday, we got to see the side of the Mess Hall we'll be working on in person, for the first time.

Here's some footage we shot of the place while we were there...

And here are a few photos we snapped too...

We've definitely got our work cut out for us, huh?

We're gonna use a lot of the "stuff" Diane has collected over the years, and our friend Mary Kay Andrews also gave us some killer leads on where to look for great "junk" yesterday too. And Jane's gonna take us shopping at all her favorite local places too- so I'm sure we'll be able to furnish those big empty rooms in no time!

Photobucket

As for the "Name the Cottage" contest I mentioned in my last post, if you'd like to submit a name, simply leave a comment on this post telling us what you think the cottage should be called.
Then, next week, Diane (who owns the cottage) will pick her top five favs out of all the names submitted.
After that, we'll post her five favorites here on our blog, so that everyone can vote for their #1 favorite name out of the five that Diane chooses.
The person who came up with the winning name will win a fabulous prize package courtesy of Mermaid Cottages!

(Note: If someone submits the same name more than once, we'll look to the earliest submission to determine who the winner is.)

Good luck and have a wonderful Wednesday!

  1. Love the cottage. How many times can we enter a name?

    "Poseidon's Getaway"

  2. I don't know why, but the name "The Sunny Side Up Cottage" strikes me, lol.

I know you're going to do a beautiful job with this place! I can't wait to see it!

  6. It's so cute! I can't wait to see it all come together =)

Personally, I like The Whispering Palm for the name, the place just looks so quiet and peaceful that you'll be able to hear everything, and Palm for "the Palmers" who are decorating masters!

Or how about "The Lettered Getaway" as a little tribute to you and your hubby!

    Either would be adorable!

I can't wait to see the finished product!

  7. I can't wait to see what you do with the space. To me, a name like "Merry Time Cottage" would honor its seaside (maritime) location and past!

    ReplyDelete
  8. "Bella Vita"...beautiful life...that is what a beach house represents to me! Can't wait to see the finished product!! Have fun!!

  9. I love a creative challenge and couldn't narrow my list to just one. Here are my favs, the list started out longer!

    Dew Drop Inn
    The Baracks
    Settle Inn
    Sweet Dream-Inn
Georgia On My Mind (this is our baby girl's name)
    Shore Delight
    Sand Castle
    Easy Breezy
    Lazy Daze

  10. Soooo anxious to see the final product, although the wide open spaces are so appealing

  11. oh wow, I want to LIVE there! so...the name ...."She Sells Sea Shells cottage" I just think the name would be sooo sweet! Plus, who would forget a cottage beach house with that name?! How fun it would be everytime someone would call and request it by name, haha!

  14. Hmm.. if I were making a reservation here, I would love for The Blue Breeze Cottage to show up on my credit card statement! It makes me think of the breezes blowing through windows and sheer curtains fluttering into the room while I sat on a wicker bench in white capri pants and a straw hat with a good book and an "island kitty" and watched the waves crash in. I can't wait to see it finished! Where do I go to make a reservation? :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, or if the cottage isn't on the water it could be:
    "Heaven by the Beach"

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'd say Windy Whispers or Whispy Winds or something whimiscal like that :-)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I suggest "The Galley."

    And here is why:

Because it is part of the Mess Hall I think that it should have some Cafeteria inspired name. And a Galley reminds me of boats and the ocean.

If you are felling more edgy you could go with "Rock Galley" inspired by Kevin's rock'n'roll roots.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love the photos and can't wait to see what you do there!

And for names, I like "Palmer's Bliss, or The Blissful Palm" :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. It already looks so cute, I can't wait to see what you guys do with it!

    Here are my name ideas:

Just Peachy (a tribute to GA, of course)
    Bungalow Bliss
    Southern Comfort
    Shoot the Breeze

    ReplyDelete
  20. If it were my cottage, I'd name it "Loggerhead Lair". Loggerhead to honor the wonderful sea turtles that I've heard are residents and Lair which means a "hideaway".

I love it when people can in some way pay homage to the wildlife we all enjoy, especially in such a beautiful place.

    Good luck!

    The Paper Moon Cottage
Biscuit By The Sea(it was a Mess Hall right?)
    Sea Biscuit Cottage

  25. i was thinking something like,
'inspired living' but that's too simple. I got the impression there are two sides based on you saying the "side we're gonna decorate". So...

    *Twobee Inspired*
(To be or not to be...)
Two (cuz' there's two?) bee (an ode to Tybee Island)

  28. I've always liked "Shangri-La" as a getaway name. Something a little more beachy might be "The Breezy Bungalow" or further off the beaten path might be something like "Fair Winds" or "Pelican Landing".

What a charming cottage! My idea would be to name the cottage "Front Porch Cottage" or "The Sweetheart Cottage".
Because the cottage is being designed by two "sweethearts" that are bringing the cottage to "life"!
I can't wait to see the Cottage sparkle!

    The Barefoot Bungalow
    Sun on my Nose
Sand 'tween my Toes (wish we had a pair of cottages to name!)
    The Sea Star Shack
    The Sandy Palm
    The Good Life
    Somewhere Beautiful

Best of luck to you- can't wait to see what you do with the place!

  42. I'd name it "Shakespeare's Hut" with the tagline "Tybee or not Tybee... that is never a question!"

This is a play on words from Shakespeare's quote, "to be or not to be, that is the question"

    ReplyDelete
  43. Since Tybee means "Salt" why not use something like "The Salty Breeze"? Can't wait to see the cottage!

  46. Hi, Layla! How about "Alphabet Soup"? Since it was the Mess Hall and The Lettered Cottage is decorating it?

Also, you are such an inspiration to me! We're buying a house in IL with a coach house that I plan to decorate in a casual, beachy style (I know there are no beaches close to IL, but I like the style)! I will be blogging about it later this summer, so I'll be sure to remind you to stop by and take a look to see what you've inspired me to do!

  48. This is usually the week we are at Tybee. :-( So sorry to miss you! I know exactly where the Mess Hall is and I can't wait to see what you do with it! Huge bonus, future renters with kids, the park is right behind you! Layla and Kevin, you totally have to try to hook up with JCM (oh yeah, he dropped the Cougar :-) if he is there while you are. He is a Hoosier and probably totally down to Earth. Is his beach house pink?

  53. Can't wait to see the finished product! Here are a couple of my entries for a name:

    -Shore Thing Cottage {It's a "shore" thing that people will want to stay there!}

    -The Palm Side Inn {since there are two sides and you'll be decorating one of them}

  54. How about "Calm, Cool and Collected."

It's a calming place to be, and soon to be a very "cool" place to stay, and I am sure it will be full of wonderfully collected pieces!

    ReplyDelete
  55. What a great blank slate. I can't wait to see what y'all do with it.

    As for a name...
"The Sassafras Hideaway" - it speaks to the history of Tybee

  56. how exciting I have two names in mind going with the "mess hall" theme : The dinner Bell and Three Square

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi! I'll try too!

    Dreamy Retreat
    Mythical Nest
    Sweet Escape
    Sunburst Fun

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think I got it mixed up, I meant "Cool, Calm and Collected." Besides the reason I mentioned above, it's also a Rolling Stones song, which makes it even better!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love the space I know you guys are going to do great things with it! It's a gorgeous cottage.

I've had a couple of names rattling around in my head for it...

    Briney Breeze

    (Let the) Salty Air Inn

The Plover's (or Heron's or Egret's or Cormorant's or Spoonbill's or Osprey's) Nest. The Mess Hall is cozy, which is where the "nest" idea came in, and it could be a great resting place for any seabird... I would have suggested the Stork's Nest, but that might limit who would stay there... :)

Eggshell Cottage (something about the quality of the light in your photos makes me think of light filtered through the thin shell of an egg)

Shutter Island (I'm trying to be clever. Lots of windows!!)

Screened Inn (Now I'm just being mischievous).

    Love,

    Weezie

  60. Since its a duo of cottages, what if you name that one "Two if By Sea"

    ReplyDelete
  61. I suggest "Summer Belle" here's my thinking...

You're in the south so I started by thinking 'Southern Belle'. But that sounded too persnickity. A beach cottage should be calm, cool, and laid back. Yet at the same time the "Belle" is because we all know if Layla's got her hands in it, its gonna be loaded with class!

Can't wait to see the end result!

  62. I envy you being able to work at the beach AND doing what you love.

Here are a few names bouncing around in my head:

    Turtle-view Cottage
    Turtle-bee Cottage
    Turtle-cove Cottage
    Turtle Island Cottage

Can you sense a theme here? :-)

Cannot wait to see the progress of this cottage!

  63. hi Layla!

You stress your passion for creating spaces that "make your sould smile" and for making a home that inspires...

I think the cottage should be named The Inspired Cottage..

I cannot wait to see what you do with it!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yay! So glad ya'll arrived and I'm eager to see your junk finds as they're found!!! One thing is for sure...the process and product will be spectacular!

Okay...I did a bit of research because I knew so little about Tybee. And as it turns out the French were allured to Tybee because of the Sassafras roots native to the island...considered a miracle cure, they were a hot commodity back in the day :)

So...my toss in the name basket game is...

    "Sea Grass N' Sassafras"

...a nod to what's in store for this mess hall under your meticulous eye for beachy design and a tribute to Tybee's past!

    ReplyDelete
  65. How about Welcome Back Cottage? Puns are always fun (Welcome Back Kotter). :) And the name signifies a welcoming retreat that is always glad to see you even if other things/people in your life are getting you down!

    Hannah

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh my gosh, what a great cottage. How about "Serendipity Mermaid". The definition of serendipity is a propensity for making fortuitous discoveries while looking for something unrelated. The entire space seems to lend itself to that definition. Have fun, you two!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. What a beautiful place!! I can't wait to see what you do!

How about "Heaven's Island" as a name.

    ReplyDelete
  68. That place is beautiful even without furniture!
I saw a headboard once made out of starfish. It was really tall from bed to ceiling and covered in white starfish! SO pretty! If I can find the link I'll send it to you for inspiration! :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. In the Palm of Her Hand Cottage.

It's a play on y'alls name, the idea of being in the palm of a hand creates a feeling of being cozy and protected (like a good cottage makes you feel) you will be using your hands to do so much hard and creative work . . .etc.:-)

By the way, I have never commented before but I have been reading and reading and admiring and admiring for some time.

    ReplyDelete
  70. "The Liberty Locker."
Inspired by The Mess Hall name and Naval terms.
Liberty as in free time away from work, I liked it better than Leave which means vacation.
And Locker as in where you put your stuff.
Thanks and I hope you have a great time with the redo. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Sticking to the Mess Hall theme, what about:

A Serving of Sea (like a serving of food from the mess hall)

    or

The Sun of the Day (like Soup of the day)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Soooo... I would say, "Dog Days of Summer" since it is a vacation rental and Diane has those cute pups!

Or Beachy Keen because you can't go wrong with a name that has beach in it.

  77. I'm going to go with:

-The Sunshine Cottage (since there is so much natural sunlight with all those gorgeous windows)
    -The Peach Retreat
    -Crab Cove
    -Starfish Cottage
    -Starfish Inn
    -The Sand Dollar

After discovering brick in the closet, I think something like
Brick Beach Cottage would be cute.

With ALL of those windows, it would be fun to have a name that spoke LIGHT & SUN!!!

Since someone said Tybee means salt you could call it "Salty Sunshine"

    How about "Cottage 1-4-3 "??

  89. How about

    "GALLEY'S SEASIDE"
    or
    "GALLEY COAST HOUSE"

I like Galley since it is the name of the "mess hall" on a ship. Kinda ties into the whole Ocean, Mermaid, Tybee Island thing.

  92. Okay, I have to put in my ideas on this one.

    1. The Salty American......
salty for Tybee and the fact that it used to be a place to eat meals and american for what the building represented, a piece of american history.

    2. Seasoned Bliss.........
again seasoned for the building being a former place for eating and bliss, well, that doesn't need much explaining. To be there for even a day would be bliss. A beautiful cottage and a beautiful island. What more do you need?

Well, maybe sitting on that porch with a glass of sweet ice tea and a breeze or an "island kitty" nap in a hammock, sigh!

Can't wait to see how it turns out, I know it will be awesome!
    Blessings,

    "Sweet Salt Cottage"

as tybee is the native Euchee word for salt it basically translates to "Sweet Tybee Cottage".

    I also like:

"The White (or Pure) Salt Cottage"

"Milk & Honey House" as a reference to the Mess Hall where this was a staple.

"Los Bajos Belle" which isn't as poetic as the other's though Los Bajos was the original name given to Tybee by the Spanish in 1520.

"Dinner Bell Cottage (or Galley)" again as a reference to the Mess Hall.
