The Lettered Cottage Magazine- Screened Inn Issue

Hey there!
I hope all is well in your neck of the world this spendid Saturday afternoon.

Everything is groovy over here at TLC.

Well, except for the fact that I'm still hobbling around here due to the large-and-in-charge invisible shards of glass embedded in the ball of my foot and big toe.

Yowza!

But it's all good in the hood.
I've had more time to SIT and work on design consultations, and put the finishing touches on the Screened Inn e-zine!

The photos I included this time are of the living/dining room.
(Oh, and I snuck in some exterior shots of the place this time too!)

Here's how the living/dining room looked when we got there...

We had such a great time working on this cottage for Diane at Mermaid Cottages, and we'll never forget the June we spent on Tybee.

And we wanna send out a big thanks to everyone who helped us with the re-do.
(Friends, painters, handymen, gardeners, cleaning crew, sponsors and my Mom!)
You RULE, and we certainly couldn't have finished on time or on budget without you!

Photobucket

Now that we've finished the "just for fun Screened Inn e-zine", we're pretty excited to see whatcha think of the "for real premiere issue of The Lettered Cottage e-zine" we've been putting together.
(Which, by the way, we're hoping to release in August or September!)
Among other things, it'll include uplifting articles, step-by-step tutorials, ce"web"rity interviews, inspiring interiors, and even some video segments too.
We hope ya dig it!

(PS- so that we can (hopefully!) continue to release the Lettered Cottage e-zine on a regular basis, we're on the lookout for advertisers who want to snag a spot in the upcoming premiere issue. If you're interested in hearing about the rates for either a half, or full page ad- please drop me a line at LaylaPalmer@aol.com. Thank you!)

"Screened Inn"- Sand & Sea Bedroom

Hola!

In addition to stepping on what has to the worlds smallest glass factory, (Can you say embedded and invisible? Ouch!) I also added a few more pages to the Screened Inn e-zine today.

Remember this room?

Photobucket

When you enter the house it's the first thing you see on the other side of the kitchen, so we wanted it to look extra "come hither".

Diane (the homeowner & property manager) wanted it to function as a "kids hang out/sleeping room", so we used two twin-sized beds and had the cable company put in another cable outlet in the corner of the room, near the foot of one of the beds.
It was the perfect spot to angle a little, white antique table and a small flatscreen TV.

Photobucket

Since it was such a blank slate, we did have to buy quite a few things for this room. But we really didn't have to spend a whole lot.

We used tall, inexpensive, linen panels from Ikea across the wall of windows & french doors so that guests staying in this room could have a little privacy when they needed it. (We threaded the panels onto a long length of sturdy galvanized pipe to keep costs down, and the finish of the pipe worked great with the galvanized items in the kitchen next door.)

The FABULOUS rug on the floor came from TJ Maxx ($39.99 for a 4x6). It's seriously one of my favorite things in the whole house. (FYI- It comes in different sizes, and in black and red too!)

The photography on the walls was shot by yours truly, and we had it printed at Bay Camera Company in Savannah. The frames came from Michaels, and they were on sale at the time. The bed frames and lamps were yard sale finds, and the bedding all came from HomeGoods.
You remember the day we bought the bedding, right?...

And, of course, we had to break out the brushes and re-paint a few things in this room too.
Diane's old dresser got a couple coats of Walmart's "County White", (it used to be painted a milk chocolate color.) and the head and footboards are painted Sherwin Williams "Stolen Kiss".

Wanna see?

We've got one more room to feature before we wrap up our tour of the Screened Inn-
so come on back to see photos of what we did in the biggest room in the house, a little later this week!

"Screened Inn"- Lemonade Mermaid Bedroom

Happy weekend friend!

We got a lot of work done around here last week (still trying to play catch up), but we did get to break away for a few hours yesterday for this little guy's 1st birthday party...

Photobucket
(This pic was taken last Halloween)

And last night, I added a few more pages to the "Screened Inn" e-zine.

This time, we're featuring the "Lemonade Mermaid" bedroom.

Like the rest of the rooms in the house, we mainly used things Diane (the homeowner and property manager) already had.

We did buy a few accessories and some bedding, but other than that, we just got creative, and re-painted & re-purposed things so that they all worked together.

And since the goal of the whole re-do was to set the place up as a vacation rental, we worked in both a queen-sized bed and a twin-sized bed into this room.

Now, before you check out the new pics, here's a quick look back at the way the room looked when we got there...

Next up, the "Sand & Sea" bedroom! So stay tuned for more pics of that, (and the living and dining room!) coming soon to a monitor near you!

"Screened Inn" Kitchen, Baths & Master Bedroom

Hello Friend- and welcome to "Screened Inn"...
the magazine!

Photobucket

I'm kidding.
It's not actually a real-deal-completely-finished magazine.
We just started to throw it together yesterday, for fun.

Photobucket

But we have been working on a real, extra fancy-schmancy e-zine that we do hope to finish and release very soon!

It'll be free of charge to all those who want to read it, and we'd like to release a new one each season. It'll include interviews, tutorials, and of course, house tours and decorating ideas galore!

More details about that coming soon, but for now, you can check out our Screened Inn project by clicking on the flipbook below.

But, real quick, here's a look at what the kitchen looked like when we got there earlier last month...

Hope you enjoyed the tour of the kitchen, bathrooms, and master bed & bathroom!

We had so much fun working on them.

Stay tuned for photos of the "Lemonade Mermaid" bedroom, the "Sand & Sea" bedroom, and the dining/living room later this week!

Photobucket

In other news, we finally started a "The Lettered Cottage" Facebook page!

The "Lettered Love" Room at Screened Inn

Since my heart literally skips a beat each time a new shelter mag appears in my mailbox, I decided to have some fun and display the master bedroom photos we shot at Screened Inn "magazine style" in this post.

(My blog is my playground, and passion pushes my swing!)

But before you look at the "pages" I put together, let's check out the "before" photos once again, shall we?

Photobucket

We had a totally blank slate to work with, and the walls had just been coated with Benjamin Moore's "Moonlight White" a few days before we got there.

Photobucket

Since the goal of this project was to "pull together a pretty place on a penny", and because Diane already had tons and tons of great furniture and bedding for us to work with when we got to the house, we really didn't have to purchase that many additional items for this room.
All we added was a small jar & flower, two red & white striped pillow covers, two white chenille euro shams, some bath towels, a bath mat and a whole buncha' vinyl wall words.
We found everything else (furniture, bedding, lamps, desk, chair, settee, etc.), along with loads of other stuff, sitting in the living room the first day we arrived. (Diane owns a few different cottages on the island- hence, all the great stuff she had just lying around!)

Here's what we came up with...

And there ya have it!

One extra-sweet, shabby chic, master suite!

Photobucket

Some of my favorite things we incorporated into the room are

- the stacked doors as an extra-tall headboard

- the rusty chandelier in the bathroom

- the quilt draped across the end of the bed that we borrowed from my friend Jane

- the red & white striped pillow covers "Seamstress Sally" made
(I'm such a sucker for a stripe!)

- the vintage tablecloth as wall art
(Funny story- The day before our open house we realized we didn't have a large piece of art for the wall above the desk. Thanks to one heckuva cool tablecloth Diane had left on the kitchen counter the day before, we were able to create a unique wall-hanging that just happened to match the room beautifully too!)

- the vinyl wall words
(Courtesy of LeenTheGraphicsQueen.com. Click here to read about her experience on Tybee!)

The big quote on the wall reads:

"I think that there is no truer place than an island.
Whether it's a sandbar or a bubble-up of volcanic rock or a jut of tropical coral,
an island stands only by some whim of fate, given a chancy foothold among the chaos. An island often makes you change your sense of perspective, your mind and your direction too. With the tide coming in over the castles you build, the currents sweeping you places you didn't plan on going, the mists rolling in mysteriously over what you thought was clear.
When I go to an island, I know that I'm in that state of grace in which anything can happen."

Photobucket

Hope you enjoyed the tour of the master bedroom.
I'll be back soon with photos of the kitchen and middle bath!
