VA Beach Room Re-do Items & Behind-The-Scenes

Howdy! Hope you had a great weekend. We spent most of today getting "back on track". Luggage, laundry and litter, oh my. If I didn't know any better I'd think our cat purposely threw paw fulls of litter onto the floor in front of his litter box to punish us for leaving him. That, or he used it as confetti to celebrate that we went away. :-)
I also managed to compile the list of items we used in the room re-do we did in Virginia Beach today. All of the photos below link to the stores where we purchased the items.

"Designview" Maple Louvera Roman Shade:

(We bought one that measured 31" wide, and another that measured 72" wide to simulate the look of double windows above the headboard.)

"Darjeel" double curtain rods in bronze:

Drop Cloths:

"Alvine Trad" curtains:

(We used these behind the drop cloth drapes to add another layer of color and pattern to the room.)

"Riktig Ogla" curtain ring clips:

Pottery Barn king-sized "Classic Ticking" duvet and euro shams in blue:

Pottery Barn "Kristine" 20" pillow covers:

Pottery Barn "Pick-Stitch" 12x24 lumbar pillow cover in ink blue:

12x24 lumbar pillow insert:

(We used this lumbar pillow on the window seat)

8x10 "Cooper" Cotton Rug in blue:

31" wide "Billy" bookcase:

(We used two of these in Brandon and Heather's room)

15.75" wide "Billy" bookcase:

"Billy Byom" doors for the lower half of the two wide "Billy" bookcases:

(We used four of these to give Brandon and Heather extra storage for folded clothes.)

Knobs for the doors:

(The doors did come with little knobs, but they were plain, white pegs and we wanted to do something a little more fancy)

Beadboard wallpaper:

(One roll covered the backs of all three bookcases)

Bookcase lights:

"Hemnes" dresser:

(We used this small piece of furniture just inside the bedroom door. Although, Brandon and Heather's armoire (which they had previously used in this spot) is tall, dark and handsome, it's also very deep. Using this shorter, lighter-colored, shallow piece allows you to see the whole room when you come through the door, which is much more refreshing than walking into the side of a huge armoire.)

Tip Du Jour: The wall here wasn't very wide, so all the "adult-sized" dressers I looked at were all too wide. I ended up finding this smaller-scale dresser in the childrens furniture department. You can often find the same style furniture pieces there, but they're just a little smaller in scale, which is exactly what we needed here!

(The mirror above the small dresser is from Walmart)

Small "Jonsbo Egby" table lamp:

"Beta" plant pot:

"Kardemumma" plant pot:

"Branas" baskets:

"Agen" baskets:

6" and 8 3/4" "Sockerart" white enamelware pitchers:

(We used the small and medium-sized pitchers on top of the armoire.)

"Fejka" artificial plants:

(Heather said she didn't have a green thumb, so I picked up a couple of these artificial plants. We used the first one and the third one.)

"Sagolik" lidded jars:

"Beach" sign from White Flower Farmhouse:

Driftwood Sailboat from White Flower Farmhouse:

The paint color we used on the walls is "Cream Fleece" (233) by Benjamin Moore.

It was a very busy three days, but we did manage to sneak in some time to shoot a little video ourselves...

If you want to check out the segment that aired on CBN, you can watch it here.

We want to send a big thanks out to all the fine folks who helped us finish the room on time. (The scenic department at CBN rules!) Tomorrow, it's back to work on design consultations for me, and the guest bathroom reno for Kevin. It's great to be back, and we're excited to blog about the transformation throughout the week!

Bathrooms on the Brain

We're home! After an 11.5 hour drive last night, we pulled into Alabama early this morning. By the time we got to our house my eyes were playing some serious tricks on me. Who knew that not getting enough sleep could lead to crazy visions of moving floor tiles. I swear it looked like there were snakes underneath them. I had to keep telling myself I was just tired, and that my altered state of awareness would eventually wear off. A couple hours after we got home, I went back into the bathroom to see whether or not our tiles were still twitching. Thankfully, they were not, and other than feeling like I will probably need to go to bed early tonight- I'm back to my normal, stable, self. :-)

Speaking of bathrooms- Kevin is anxious to get back to work on ours despite his swollen, stabbed thumb, and a super sore shoulder thanks to a tumble down a flight of slippery stairs yesterday. He's normally not so accident prone. Must be the lack of sleep thing or something. ;-)

Here's a few photos of another bathroom I love. It's from the 2007 Cottage Living Idea House I blogged about the other day...

Designer, Lane Leyens, used lyrics from the Johnny Cash song, "Flushed from the Bathroom of your Heart" on the walls around the room. The brown wall color was pulled in from the guest bedroom, and the pink color of the letters came from the nearby girl's bedroom. Using the two colors bridges the two design schemes and creates a fresh and unexpected palette in the whimsical bathroom.

You can order vinyl wall words of your favorite song or poem from several websites online.

Hmmmm...we do have some big, blank walls around our bathtub...

...but I think we're going to stick with our initial idea for the walls, which will also inject a big dose of unique, cottage-style charm. More about that as soon as Kevin finishes the vanity side of the room!
(PS...if you're new to our blog, don't worry- the bathroom is currently painted a soothing shade of "Sea Salt" by Sherwin Williams. No more 'Lectric Lavender!) :-)

Hope you're having a wonderful and warm, winter weekend!

Layla

PS...I'm excited to watch Sandra Lee's special "Season of Surprise" on HGTV tonight at 8/7c. Kevin and I had a chance to meet her in the green room at CBN the other day, and she was so much fun! She's just as effervescent and inspiring in person as she is on TV. On tonights episode, Sandra will visit a couple who gave birth to premature triplets. She'll show them easy ways to preserve family memories, update heirloom party decor and create unforgettable family holiday recipes, so that despite the chaos, they'll be able to plan perfect parties for years to come.

Homeward Bound and Presto Chango's

Greetings! We're visiting family in North Carolina today, and we plan to hit the road back to sweet home Alabama tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to sleep in our bed and see our furkids...it feels like we've been gone forever!

We've received quite a few emails about the items we used in Brandon and Heather's room re-do, so I'll be sure to blog about all of them when we get back home. It was such a fun makeover, and an experience we'll never forget!

In the meantime, I thought I'd post a few photos of some other rooms I've had the pleasure of (virtually) working on this year.

(Move your cursor back and forth over my clients "before" photos below to check out the inspiration drawings I created for them)

The environment we surround ourselves with inside our homes plays such a huge part in shaping the image we portray outside our homes. So have fun creating spaces that reflect the personalities of the people who call your house, home!

Hope you're having a great week!

Work Day and Reveal Day!

What a whirlwind the past couple of days have been! Kevin snapped this photo of me right before we left the hotel at 7:30 a.m. yesterday morning...

I think it was the only time I stood still the entire day! :-)

We worked a very fast-paced 16 hours to make sure the room was ready for its big reveal this morning. It was exhilarating and we had so much fun putting the room together! We ended up working on the room (with the help of the wonderful homeowners, Brandon and Heather) 'til after midnight last night. By the time we left, I could barely form a complete sentence and Kevin had managed to bleed on the curtains and the window seat cushion. :-( Long story short, around 12:30 a.m. he was working faster than he should've been with a box cutter. He wound up with the entire triangular-shaped razor blade embedded in the base of his thumb, on the top side of his left hand. Thankfully, Brandon is in med school and works in the E.R., so he immediately started helping Kevin get his bleeding under control. I had to leave the room. It was just too gruesome. But Kevin was completely calm throughout the whole ordeal. Heather said he actually yawned while they were wrapping his thumb up. :-)

Fortunately, after all that medical drama, we were able to get the room all put together, and even managed to get work in about four 4 hours of sleep too! :-)

Here's a couple of before and after photos...

And here are some more interactive before and afters. Just move your cursor back and forth over the photos to see the room transform...

I want to send out a big thank you to Teresa at Cherry Checkers for making three of the pillow shams and the window seat cushion. They were perfect and the homeowners were thrilled with them. Teresa is an incredible seamstress and I highly recommend her! :-)
(PS...Teresa- don't worry, I used hydrogen peroxide to remove the blood from your beautiful cushion!)

This afternoon I taped a Christmas decor segment that will air on the 17th. It was a lot of fun taping in the studio at CBN. We're looking forward to heading back over there tomorrow morning to sit in on Sandra Lee's taping. (We actually just passed her in the hallway here at our hotel. Turns out her room is just a few doors down from ours!) Wonder if she'd be up for a slumber party?

:-)
