Screen Door - Dining Room

I'm SOOOOO excited to show you what I found!
If you've been following my blog for a while, you know about my obsession with using a Screen Door as a Pantry Door.
Well, I FOUND ONE!
And it was RIGHT under my nose this whole time. DUH!!!
I was making one of a million trips out my back door yesterday, and it hit me. (Not literally)
I ALREADY OWNED THE MOST WONDERFUL OLD CHIPPY BLACK SCREEN DOOR EVER!!!!!

So remember my temporary "door"?

Well, behind that curtain lurked this:

And then I realized I had this:

So I put it here:

And then I put up that picture ledge I've been talking about adding:

So once the flooring is installed in the Pantry, I'm going to cover the walls with beadboard (painted white) and then I'm going to paint the back door (you can see in this photo) a Dusty Apple Green, to tie into the Kitchen:

So, here's the space...in all it's UNaccessorized glory. Can't wait to get curtains and a different Dining Table in there. Ooh! And black french doors instead of the one window...Oh, and new lighting and tongue-n-groove planks on the ceiling, and...and...and... :-)

I've got BIG BIG plans for the Pantry...it's gonna be so cute!
The flooring is going in today- so stayed tuned for more pics as the room evolves!

LOVE IT!!! I wish you lived close to me I would hire you in a minute! Just love your style and your creativity. I think it looks fantastic. Can't wait to see all your other changes. You've got me thinking now too about my pantry. Only problem is I'm not neat so that could be kinda scary. Great job! Lisa

Great idea - Adds so much character to the space. I have been thinking about painting the front of my pantry doors with chalkboard paint.

Seriously, Layla, you have a great eye. I LOVE the idea of the green door peeking through the screen door...which, by the way, is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

Hey Layla! I love it! I've wanted one since I saw one on Cherry Hill Cottage...I have my eagle eye out...I am adding wainscotting to the dining area...What kind of molding did you add there? Is it a 2 by 4? I love it... I want to add a shelf like yours...Can you give me some instruction so I can explain it to my sexy carpenter boy aka Hubby!:) Meme

That's a perfect solution. Way to go!

The board laying flat across the beadboard is a 1x8. I routed the edges of it to give it a more "finished" look.
Then just attach it to the wall, counter-sink the screws, fill them with caulk, prime and paint.
Next I attached a pre-primed 1x4 (for the pictures to rest on) by drilling down into the top of the 1x8. I also used wood glue for extra adhesion.
I caulked the crack between the two boards for a more seamless look, then and painted everything white two more times.

Can't wait to get some photography up there! :-)

That reminds me of when I was watching "House Hunters" one time and one of the bedrooms had a screen door on it and the lady was like, "What is this?" and the realtor said, "They must have a cat." (I guess to keep the cat out of the baby's room?)

That was in the South, too, I remember...which would make alot of sense, since you have much warmer weather down there for much longer...and it's hard to get a cross breeze with all of the doors closed...I thought it was a brilliant idea!

It will be cool to see how your pantry turns out...and you will also get a cross breeze since you have a door in there, too :)

I like your table :)

Oh, I love those screen doors. I've seen those used quite a bit in showhomes as pantry doors too. Just went to a lake house a few weeks ago that had one. Too cute! And you did that picture ledge all by yourself?! I'm really jealous...I have got to get some power tools. My hubby is not handy, so I need to learn how to do it myself.

A good screen door so perfect for your pantry.
On my last house I put the old fashioned- with- springs -screen doors on my screened porch so I could hear that sound as they shut. Lovely and painted black.. just the right touch.

That is soooo neat....you must look at my pantry screen door...although I STILL have not painted it. I'm still not sure what color I want.
Unfortunately, my kids have already stuck their foot through the screen. I'm thinking of putting blackboard on the bottom part..... http://livingthegoodlife5.blogspot.com/2008/01/my-favorites-in-my-house.html ......got any suggestions? My pantry is not large...more like a coat closet size. I would love your input. I'm voting for you!!!!

BTW - thank you for sharing your paint colors for your reading room. I went out and grabbed those swatches and brought them home and they are exactly what I've been looking for. Not sure how I'll put them together, but I'm going to.
