Junkin' in Nashville with Rhoda and Kim!

A couple of years ago, I stumbled onto something called a "blog" written by this lovely lady...

I discovered one written by this gorgeous gal on the same day...

I remember feeling so inspired as I read through what they referred to as their "posts".

And I was extra-ecstatic to find out that they both lived just a little ways up I-65 from me! (Rhoda is in Birmingham and Kim is in Nashville.)

Fast forward to yesterday.
The three of us got together for a little fun at the Nashville Flea Market, so I thought I'd share some photos of the stuff we saw, here on the blog today.

Photobucket

I had PLANNED on shooting lots of video footage- but because I forgot to put a memory card in my new point-and-shoot camera (Kodak EasyShare M580 from Office Depot), I was only able to take a handful of pics...

Rhoda posted lots more photos of all the fabulous stuff we saw over at her blog though.
Here's a few that feature some of my favorite finds of the day...

I fell in love with so many things!

But since I'm on a MAJOR simplification kick, I really didn't plan on buying much.

I did find an irresistible, old ladder marked at $15 though- and I ended up snaggin' it for just ten bucks.

It just barely fit in my rental car...

We couldn't figure out how to get the back seats to fold down, so we had to get creative.

(And, yes, I did make a blonde joke as Rhoda and I struggled to wedge it into place.)

I was instantly drawn to it's boat-like shape...

And, of course, I dug the writing on the side of it...

And all the little metal bits too...

Not sure where it'll live yet.

Maybe in the guest bathroom, up against the wall as a towel rack. (?)

Who knows!

For now, it's hanging out in our dining room.

Along with our bed...

Ah, life in a fixer!

Check out my new tablecloth. Oops. I mean, duvet cover.

Sleeping on the dining room floor has (surprisingly) been pretty relaxing experience, but after last night, I discovered that sleeping on the dining room floor alone is the total pits!

At least I had Max and Bean to suffocate snuggle me.

Not to worry though, Kevin's on his way back from Atlanta as I type. And although he's extremely tired, he's really happy with the way the backstory scenes turned out.

He didn't get to Tweet as much as he had hoped because it just too darn dark for his cell phone camera, but he was able to shoot lots of well-lit, high-def, behind-the-scenes footage with our friend Josh's RIDICULOUSLY awesome Canon 5D camera, so I look forward to sharing some of it here on our blog this week.

Photobucket

Hate to write and run, but it's lunchtime, and eating in the dining room has never been more fun.

The Crazy Cottage

Well, I finally got my closet cleaned out, and man was there a lot of stuff in there!

Here's a SMALL sampling of some of the things I discovered...

May have to open that etsy shop back up!

And imagine my surprise when I uncovered this full-size keyboard, hidden behind one of my old robes...

I forgot I even OWNED a full-size keyboard!

I'm gonna see if our niece or nephews want it- because I'm certainly not shoving that thing back in there again.

I also managed to fill one 40-gallon trash bag, and one huge box, full of clothes I can't fit into/can't imagine ever wearing again.

We brought them over to Goodwill last night and I can't tell you how good it felt to get that stuff outta the house!

Photobucket

Since the bedroom has become a complete and total disaster work zone in the past 48 hours, we've temporarily moved our king-sized mattress into our dining room so that we can sleep in there while we re-do the bedroom.
(What's that ya say? Where's our dining table? Why that's in the living room, next to the piano, of course.)

Having to "camp out" isn't so bad though.
The dining room is the coolest room in the house (our HVAC died earlier this year, and we have a window unit in there), and I've enjoyed waking up to a pretty blue ceiling in the morning, and having a Wonder Wall as a headboard night...

So for the time being, the dining room will act as our bedroom, and the living room will act as both our living room and our dining room.

Needless to say, it's a little crazy around the ol' cottage this week.

But we're okay with crazy.

Especially when the end result is a kick butt (keyboard-less!) closet.

"Wonder Wall" Questions

Greetings!

We had a quite a few questions on our "Wonder Wall" post, so I thought I'd tackle them here today.

Photobucket

Nope!
Removing the drywall from interior walls doesn't change a thing.
As you could probably tell in the wonder wall video, there wasn't any insulation in the walls to begin with, and the wood was nicely capped off at the ceiling...

Photobucket

...so it's really not any different than if you added wood planks and 2x4 studs to the outside of a drywalled wall.

We did, however, remove the drywall from an exterior wall in our guest bedroom a couple years ago...

...but as you can see, the wood planks were directly underneath the drywall.
The insulation is behind the planks, and since our house is made of cinderblock- it's pretty amazingly efficient throughout the entire year.

As for the ceilings, there's insulation and plywood flooring in the attic, but we are going to add an additional layer of Radiant Barrier Foil Insulation up there soon- just so everything is really sealed up nice and tight.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

Since our master bedroom was added on to the house in 2003, I'm sure there is insulation under the drywall in there.
What we were actually planning to do was add wood planks and 2x4 studs on top of the drywall.
That's what I meant in my post the other day when I said "you could easily re-create the look by using nails, lumber and construction adhesive."

Here's an rough example of what I mean...

Photobucket

And here's a great inspiration photo...

Photobucket

However, because I change my mind a lot, we may end up doing something completely different by the time it's all said and done.
Right now, I'm just concentrating on pulling together all of the bedding elements.
Here's a sneak peek at a couple of our accent pillows...

Photobucket

(I still need a 12x16 insert for the monogrammed one.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

You got it!
I want some of the frames to sit out a little further than the rest, to give the wall some additional dimension.
(And for the person who asked about where to purchase the frame risers- they're on PotteryBarn.com!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

We love experimenting with new looks, so we just sorta went for it!
We could see the ends of the wood planks in the unfinished pantry, on the other side of the screen door, so we assumed they ran the length of that wall.
So glad they did!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

Nah!

We worried enough during the purchase process (nerve wracking!), and we still worry about how we're going to pay for this place some months, so personalizing it so that it reflects who we are, and what we love, makes the things we do worry about a little easier to handle.

Our thought process is this: Life's too short to not take risks.
And-
If we're gonna agree to pay a mortgage company over $100,000 for something, I'm gonna make sure that while this is our home, we're surrounded by spaces that make us feel happy.
Know what I mean?

Besides, if we ever do decide to put it on the market, and potential buyers aren't diggin' the exposed wood, it's all good in the hood. Drywall is around twenty bucks a sheet, and we're definitely not opposed to slappin' some back up there!
However, our house sits in a historic neighborhood in a quaint little town in Alabama, so I think most people know what they're getting into when they check out homes for sale in our area.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

I know, right?
His mama thinks so too.
He brought her flowers on Mother's Day...

Photobucket

Pretty sweet for a rock n' roller, eh?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

The dining room "wonder wall" backs up to a wall in our guest bathroom.
From the day we moved in, we could see a faint outline of what looked like a doorway in the drywall on that wall in the bathroom.
When we resume working on the bathroom, we'll take down the poorly-installed drywall and put some up that doesn't have the outline of a doorway on it!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photobucket

Sure thing, chicken wing!

Photobucket

But keep in mind, I'm not done decking it out, so I'll have to re-post an updated pic when I'm done!
(Ha! I said, the "d" word. Yeah, right!)

I am making progress though.
I received my white-sailed, driftwood sailboat from White Flower Farmhouse today...

Photobucket

Megan, who makes them, even signed it for us!

Photobucket

(Thank you Megan!)

And I got the curtains I won on eBay too...

So, the accessories are slowly but surely coming together.

I still need to decide on, and purchase, accent pillows.
(The ones in the photos are just temporary)
I'm leaning towards ochre or green as my accent color at the moment.
Maybe a little red to really liven things up!

And I still need to find two captains chairs to use at the head and foot of the table.
(The black ones you see in the photo are actually from our front porch.)

I would LOVE a couple of upholstered ones, like Mary Kay has in her dining room at Breeze Inn...

Photobucket

We shot that photo when we stayed at her place in April- and I actually blogged from the upholstered chair on the right.
*Sigh*
Such good memories!

Ooh!
And speaking of Tybee Island, Georgia-
we're heading for the coast to re-do the Mess Hall on June 7th, and we look forward to documenting all of our adventures here on the blog every day or two.

It's going to be an exciting trip- so I hope you'll tag along with us as we re-decorate that place from top to bottom!

Ooh!
And if you happen to be heading to Tybee during the month of June- we'd love to meet you. Drop us a line if you'll be in the area!
