Calling all comments!

Hi friends! I entered a writing contest over at Skimbaco Lifestyle to try and win a ticket to the Blissdom Conference in Nashville next month. I had planned on driving up to meet everyone outside the conference, but there's no way I can afford a $300.00 ticket to get into the conference itself. So when I found out that Skimbaco Lifestyle was giving away a ticket to one lucky writer, I sprang into action and wrote an uplifting blog post that I hope you'll enjoy. The rules state that the post must be written about living life to the fullest and that the person with the most comments left on their post wins a ticket to Blissdom! So if you feel inclined, I'd love it if you stopped by and gave my post a gander. And if you leave me a comment I'll be your best friend. :-)

Thank you, thank you!

PS- We got our issue of The Nest magazine yesterday! I'll be back later with all the photos! If you want a sneak peek, you can see the cover in our left sidebar under "Lettered Press"! :-)

Guest Post by Lysa TerKeurst

Going to check the mail was extraordinarily fun last week.
Not because our new mailbox stands up straight and has a door on it, but because I found a wonderful gift from my friend Lysa waiting for me...

Kevin and I met Lysa while we were at CBN in Virginia Beach. Lysa was on "The 700 Club" the same day we were and I've enjoyed reading her blog and getting to know her through email ever since.

I couldn't wait to open the package she sent, so I tore into it right there in the driveway. I started reading her book immediately. First, the Acknowledgments, then the Introduction, then Part One, then Chapter One. Then I read them all over again, out loud, to Kevin. :-) Her words immediately resonated with me, and I look forward to blogging about her book when I'm done reading it.

Today, we are so excited to have Lysa here as our special guest poster.
So grab a cup of something warm, make yourself comfortable, and be prepared to be moved by Lysa's touching story...

"Warm Icicles"
by Lysa TerKeurst

Last year my husband and I traveled to Vermont where I woke up one morning to stare at what an overnight snow storm brought us. I had never seen such snow in all my live long day. But what really caught my attention were gigantic icicles hanging from the roof line.

They were perfect.

As I stared out at them, suddenly a memory flashed across the screen of my mind.

It was about my Dad.
My biological Dad.
The one who abandoned me a long time ago and who knows nothing about my life now.

I don't have very many memories of him. And the ones I do have aren't that great. If I let my mind dwell on the gaping hole he left in my heart, I get sad even to this day.

God has been so good to help me see that I am not the child of a broken parent any longer- that I am a child of God. I am loved. I am treasured. I am wanted.

But sometimes, this nagging thought sneaks into the crevices of my heart and I start wondering, why didn't my Daddy love me?

That's why this icicle memory brought such joy to my heart. It is a good memory of my Dad. It rushed into my mind that morning in a way that brought a fresh, gleaming perspective.

I grew up in Florida which meant no snow- ever. But I remember praying for snow. Praying like a revival preacher at a tent meeting I tell ya'. If ever there could be snow in Florida, surely a passionate little girl's prayers could open up those heavenly snowflake storehouses.

One night, the temperatures dropped surprisingly low, and the weather man called for a freeze. This was a rare thing in our area. How tragic there was no precipitation on this particular cold night. It was the one night that snow might have been possible.

It broke my little snow bunny heart.

But the next morning I awoke to icicles everywhere.

Gleaming, dripping, hanging, light reflecting, glorious icicles were all over the trees in our back yard.

It was magical.

We were the only house on the block with this grand winter display.

Because I was the only girl whose Daddy thought to put out sprinklers on the one night it froze.

I don't know where this memory has been hiding for too many years. But what a gift. Somewhere in the deep, mysterious, broken places of my Dad's heart, there was an inkling of love.

I pray wherever he is today, he too remembers the night of the icicle wonder land. For it is a common thread of hope that ties too very distant hearts together.

And that makes me smile.

Thank you Lysa!

It was incredibly comforting and uplifting to be reminded that we are all loved, treasured and wanted- no matter what is happening in our lives.

Gifts from Eddie and our "Wish" Winner

So I toooootally forgot to show photos of the gifts Eddie, Jaithan and Larson Juhl sent us home with in my last post!
Duh!

We got a great canvas replica of a work of art that's displayed at the Biltmore Estate...

And two old book pages that came from a book printed in the 1800's...

Aren't they great?
I can't wait to get them all framed and hung up here at TLC!
They will be great reminders of our fun trip to the framing party.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now, for the giveaway winner announcement!

The winner of the "Wish" is......drumroll.....

Kim from 3 Peanuts!

Congratulations Kim!

Eddie Ross Framing Party at Larson Juhl

Before I tell you about our exciting day at Eddie's framing part yesterday, I just want to say that NeilMed Sinus Rinse is THE BOMB. After just three rinses, I felt much more like my old self again. I'm still not 100%, (and I did see stars a couple of times yesterday- is that weird?) but I think I'm getting better so thanks to those who recommended it!

Now, on to Eddie and Larson Juhl!

The Larson Juhl building was amazing.
The lobby was decked out with the prettiest floral arrangements...

And the food they served was delicious!
Tea sandwiches, gourmet teas, lemonade, chilled wine, and miniature desserts covered several tables in the lobby.

We all mingled and chatted for the first hour...

Then we all went into another room and enjoyed Eddie's presentation. It was wonderful and funny and informative. It was so neat to get design ideas from the man behind so many of the beautiful images in Martha Stewart Living magazine!

They gave away this framed canvas at the end of the presentation...

Eddie shot the photo and Larson Juhl printed it on canvas and framed it.

You'll never guess who won!
I don't want to totally give the answer away before she has a chance to blog about it on Monday, but here's a hint for all those that are extra curious:
check out her jacket.
:-)

After the raffle, we all went back out to the lobby for more food and photos.
Here's one of Kevin, Eddie and me...

And from left to right, this is Renae Moore, Rhoda, Eddie, Mary Kay Andrews, me and Kevin.

Mary Kay is one of my favorite authors. She wrote "The Fixer Upper" and if you haven't already read it, I highly recommend it!

And last, but not least, I had to break out a little craziness at the very end of the soiree.
Move your mouse back and forth over the photo below to witness me letting my inner lunatic out. :-)

Oh! And before I forget, the reason I asked for help translating the sentence written in French the other day is because I gave Eddie and Jaithan an old book I picked up at a flea market called "Grammaire Francaise".
It was such a neat little book, and after seeing the photo of the books on their mantel in Lonny magazine, I knew they would appreciate it's charm.

Photo: Lonny

Along with the sentence I blogged about the other day, it had some other things written in pencil inside the front cover...

I forgot to take a picture of it, but it also said, "Hattie Morgan. St. Marys. Raleigh, NC", and inside the back cover Hattie had written, "June 21, 1878".

I called St.Mary's in Raleigh, but unfortunately they've had a couple of fires and much of the information they had about students who were enrolled their in the 1800's has been destroyed.
:-(
The woman I talked to said they did offer a French class in the 1800's though, so I feel pretty confident little Miss Hattie was enrolled there.

Gotta love a 132-year-old flea market find!

Layla :-)

Houzz Ideabook- Tossed and Found

I was so sick yesterday I completely forgot to publish my Ideabook over at Houzz.com!
I'm still under the weather today, but I did manage to put together an Ideabook that will appeal to all the "junkers" in da Houzz. :-)
The inspiration for this weeks article came from Theresa and Craig Smith's double-wide mobile home, featured in Country Living a few years back. They've decorated their double-wide with salvaged materials and antiques, and it is simply divine. Here's a video which showcases their magnificent kitchen:
