Weatherizing the Water Closet

A couple of people asked about the table we're using as a vanity, so I thought I'd re-post this picture Kevin took of it right after he sanded down the top, chopped off the back legs and painted the front legs:

We loved the idea of salvaging an old farm table to use as a vanity because they have so much character!

He coated the top with a few coats of regular ol' polyurethane:

Water just beads up on it now, it's great!

Due to a major sinus headache I've been battling for the past couple of days, I haven't had a chance to go to Claudia's to get inspiration for my table skirt.

But because my pants are incessantly overflowing with ants, I did throw this piece of fabric on there today, to see how I liked the idea of a striped skirt...

It's something our prop stylist, Allistair, left us after our Nest photo shoot. He used it as a table cloth on our dining room table. (Along with the prettiest arrangement of green hydrangeas!) It's not quite the right color (I altered it in this photo- it's actually a super bright robins egg blue color, and totally clashes with the tile on our wall behind the sink.)

But I am kinda diggin' the striped skirt look. What do you think?

Today, Kevin did a little more work under the table that involved some of this:

We needed to fill in all the little gaps that were allowing cold air to flow into the house.
Like this one...

And this one...

And this one..

And this one...

The can said to "shake vigorously for one minute". So he did.

Then he got back into what we now refer to as "the dreaded position"...

...and he filled in all the little places that cold air was blowing in through...

Now he can attach a baseboard back there and finish out the flooring while I try to kick this sinus stuff.

Hey- while I have you, do you know French? I need to translate this:

Can anyone tell me what it says?

Layla :-)

(Oh, and for those who inquired, Claudia's Cloth Barn is located here in Prattville, Alabama and run by sweet Claudia herself) :-)

*Edited to include: What's a "neti pot", and where do I get one? I'm in pure agony! :-(

I believe the translations goes something like this... I take my pencils to class everyday.(If I remember my French from school). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Mrs. B said...

I agree. I was a French major in college so I hope I remember it correctly! It says," It is necessary/It's important to always bring your pencil to class." The word "toujours" means always and "vos" means yours so I think it's an instruction. I hope this helps!

Layla,

I hope your sinus head ache soon passes. Have you ever tried a nettie pot?
I like the stripped skirt. Does the farm table have casters (wheels) on the legs?
I hope you enjoy yourself Saturday with Rhoda!

I was also going to ask if you ever use a neti pot! My husband and the rest of his family (and all their bad nasal issues) all use them.

Do you ever come down to RichTex in Montgomery? I wonder how that compares to Claudia's. I've been looking for some more decent fabric stores in the area. (I live in Montgomery in Cloverdale. We emailed awhile back.)

"You must always bring your pencils to class." Is what is says!

Apis Melliflora said...

One should always bring my pencils to class. (literal)

Note the improper grammar: one/my combination.

Better:

I should always bring my pencils to class.

OR

One should always bring one's pencils to class.

Meredith said...

Beautiful Handmade, your translation is the best. I understand your confusion, Apis Melliflora, but "il faut" together more often means "it is necessary," so there's actually not a grammar problem.

Also, LOVE the striped skirt! Almost as much as I love any product that requires vigorous shaking - you should see me with the salad dressing on salad night :)

I hope you feel better soon!

Your bathroom is so beautiful! Love the stripe look.

Neti pot.........I was hemming and hawing about it and my coworker bought me one for Christmas. She got a plastic one from Walgreens. Let's just say, I now use it quite a bit. Takes some getting used to but I got relief.

Watch this video:

Good luck and feel better!!

Megandvd@Beauty in the Attempt said...

Ahh..the lovely neti pot. You can pick one up at your local pharmacy. Walgreens carries a selection as well as any other chain. (you can use a squirt bottle, but remember you may never want to use it again since the point will make friends with nose goblins or even a bulb syringe "the baby nose suckers," but a regular neti pot will require you to tilt your head for gravity purposes.)

Basically neti pot is an irrigation system for your sinuses. You use a saline solution. Please don't buy saline! You can make some for nothing...just remember to make it every day.

Saline Solution:
1/2 teaspoonful of salt in 10 oz of warm water (some people add a pinch of baking soda)

Directions:
1. Lower your head over a sink and turn your head so that your left nostril is down.
2. Pour solution from the container into your right nostril.
3. Water will drain from your left nostril into the sink.
4. Gently blow your nose.
5. Repeat the same process for other nostril.
-To prevent the solution from coming out of your mouth, open your mouth and make a "K" sound, which will close off the mouth and throat.
-You should use only enough pressure to move the solution to the back of your nose so it comes out though your mouth or nose.
-This should not cause major discomfort once you are used to it.

Cheers~

I have heard the best things about neti pot. When we were little, my Mom use to mix salt and warm water and she'd pour it in her hand, and make us suck it up our nostrils. It sounds disgusting, but it worked wonders for congestion/allergies. If you can't find the neti pot, you can just tilt your heard back and pour the mixture down your nose!

My son and husband used to usual the regular nettie pot ( http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/181-3822664-8276115?ASIN=B00168DOJ4&AFID=Froogle&LNM=B00168DOJ4|SinuCleanse_Neti_Pot_Nasal_Wash_Kit&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B00168DOJ4&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001 ), but have switched to this kind - http://www.neilmed.com/usa/sinusrinse.php and like it a lot better, we get it at Rite-Aid but I am sure you can get it at many pharmacies.

Neti Pot - the tea kettle rocks! I boil 1/4 cup of water (in a mug) and mix in 1/2 teaspoon of salt until it all dissolves. Add cold water until you fill the N.P. (but make sure it is luke-warm or it hurts...got it...not to warm, not to cold!) and add a heaping 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Seriously, I have two asthmatics who have not had a single bout all fall or winter so far and I really think it is our routine of one-in-the-morning, once-mid-afternoon Neti date. Do it over the bathtub b/c it is disgusting, but as gross as it is, I now luv seeing the disgusting colors and clots of snot coming out...I feel like I'm kicking butt on the infections/asthma attacks. Mentally, you start contemplating water-boarding, but it really isn't that bad...just keep on breathing through your mouth. Do us all a favor....video tape it with some kick butt music in the background. Just kidding.

A Neti pot is a teapot-looknig thing that facilitates a sinus/nasal rinse. You can buy them at drugstores -- I got mine at Walgreens. Don't get it if you're not willing to look and feel really silly while using it. :)

You will think I am crazy, but I swear by something for kids called "gentle Vapors". (maybe by Pediacare?) It is like VapoRub but instead of getting it all over yourself and your bed linens you plug the little nightlight into the wall and sleep away while the vapors disseminate. I will have to see about this highly recommended NetiPot though...

The skirted farm table is great.

I recommend "Nasopure", a squeeze bottle brand of nasal irrigation. I use mine every morning in the shower (near the end so the steam from the warm water has a chance to work too). It is also much less messy since you are already in the shower! When I am "well" I use half-strength saline (the packs that come with the nasopure). When I am "under the weather" I use full strength. Knock on wood... I haven't had a full-blown sinus infection for over two years since I started using Nasopure. I used to have at least 3 or 4 a year! Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon!

"Il faut toujours apporter vos crayons à la classe" means "it is always necessary to bring your pencils to class" or "one must always bring one's pencils to class". "Il faut" is a conjugation of the French verb "falloir" (similar to "devoir" but stronger and more formal) which indicates necessity.

Good luck with your sinuses! I've heard great things about the Neti Pot, but I've never tried it myself.

I have to agree with "Greg's Wife" comments. Over 15 years ago, over chronic sinus issues, a doctor recommended (not the netti pot, not sure they were as marketed then) using one of those baby ear/booger squeezers (such a technical name I've given it! ;) and a warm water salt/baking soda mix and rinsing out my sinuses. I really have to squirt the water up and almost into my throat, but oh boy, it gets that gunk out! If I do this, I can usually fight off having to go to the Dr. and get antibiotics. I also take Zicam zinc cold remedy the instant I feel a sore throat coming on. I still get sick, but not as bad, and for a shorter duration.
I hope you feel better soon!!!
I love the striped skirt, but then think you should then do a solid colored rug. Something thick and cozy and textured, maybe?

Oh, this is so WEIRD, Layla! I am watching an old episode on the Dr. Oz show I have on Tivo. He was just talking about the NETI POT!! You have to get one. Run...don't walk to Walgreens and pick on up. You will be so glad you did! It is the BEST $12.95 I even spent. Takes a little getting used to pouring warm salt water up your nose, but seriously if you use it every day it is as if it was handed straight down from heaven! Give it a try and report back to us! Some people as scared to try it...but it works! You just have to be consistent, not wait to use it when you get "stuffed". Good luck! ~mary~

JacciM said...

Go for the Neti! :) Or, if you aren't really sure, you could try the Simple Saline spray first. The simple saline comes in a can under pressure - you put the tip in your nostril, tilt your head (like the Neti), spray, and a burst of saline goes into your sinuses. There are not preservatives or drugs - it's just salt water. I use this for my children, since the spray mist is a little less startling than pouring water into their nose :)

One more thing, dairy products increase mucus production, even in people who do not have an milk intolerance of allergies. At the first sign of sinus trouble, you might consider ditching the dairy. When my kiddos get congested (sinus or chest) we immediately nix the dairy - even butter if it's bad.

Hope it helps!!!

Layla,
Your bathroom is coming along great! If I remember my HS French...the translations are right on. I happen to have a 'neti-pot' that was given to me last year by my own Dr. when I had a horrible sinus infection. It's the bulb type. The whole thing sounds disgusting and even more... difficult to do...but go in the bathroom, close the door and in the famous words of NIKE..Just Do It! You will thank yourself in minutes. I have a friend who has been using one for years and swears by it. I actually like it myself...It's not fun but IT WORKS! and....no drugs necessary! Hope you feel better, Tami E.

I agree with Megandvd that you can make your own saline solution. I use a medicine dropper that is used to administer children's medicines (mine came with Children's Motrin, or some such medication...but you can buy them at any pharmacy) to put the saline into my nose and then just roll my head around and hold my head to one side for a minute or so so that it drains out of the other nostril. It is a very 'freeing' feeling when it 'breaks through' all the crud in there! :) Sinus pain is nasty! Been there, don't like it!

I like the striped curtain. My concern would be leakages of fluids that sometimes get leaked on bathroom floors (more so if you have kids!!!!!)and the curtain soaking up said fluids. Would that be a problem?

Hey Layla~ Sorry you're under the weather! I always enjoy strolling over to your blog as a break from my routine adoption blogs. I love all the DIY projects that you and your hubby do together, besides the fact that I think your relationship is a great example to married couples everywhere! You're both adorable and so down-to-earth, I love it!!

I do like the striped skirt, but I REALLY adored the striped RUG you posted about the other day...so I'm leaning towards the rug. But either way you go, it will look great! Love the 'wish' your hubby found for you, too.

As for the Neti Pot, you don't need a fancy-schmancy one...the simple, inexpensive plasic one will do the trick. I wish I had read this post a few months ago when I first bought mine. To be quite honest, I was terrified of the thing. It sat next to my bathroom vanity getting ignored by me daily. Then my husband decided to try it out and he raved about it. I read that many flu's and infections can actually brew in our nostrils for days before they kick into full gear, and that by rinsing with salt water or a saline solution, you can usually beat the battle on seasonal sickness and allergies. One is creaping up on me again, and admittedly, I haven't been too faithful with my Neti, so I'll have to get it out again. But huge TIP: Breath through your mouth while doing it...this will keep the rinse and "whatever else" from going down your throat! Ick!! It takes a bit of getting used to, but just relax and be sure to use warm water! ;)

Good luck and feel better soon!

Love the stripes!

I finally found the nerve to try my neti pot a few weeks ago when I had a terrible sinus infection. We have the basic plastic teapot neti pot. It took me a time or two to get used to using it but it really did/does help. Just a tip... Sometimes with sinus infections, your nose is SO stuffed up that the water from the neti pot cannot flow properly through your sinsues. If that happens, you will need to use a nasal spray (preferably something with oxymetazoline as an active ingredient) FIRST...then wait a few minutes and then use the neti pot. I think that tip is actually listed in the instructions for my neti pot.

Feel better soon, Layla. :( I'm sorry that you're sick.

And I've had chronic sinus problems for about a year now. I just started using a neti pot a couple of weeks ago, and it's FANTASTIC. It's not painful at all. It's soothing, and it's given me much relief. I bought it at WalMart, and it's a blue plastic pot with pre-mixed packets that you just open and pour into warm water. Definitely try it. You'll be SOO glad you did!

Neti pots are amazing. t will change your life. Seriously. If you have a Whole Foods store near you, they have ceramic neti pots which IMO are far superior to the plastic ones. They both work the same, but the plastic ones have a weird smell to me. I've found that the best place to do it is in the shower. The steam from the shower helps open your sinuses up and well, let's be honest, using a Neti Pot is gross. You don't want anyone to see that. Feel better soon.

Layla--don't waste your hard-earned money on a neti pot...all you need is something to be able to pour a bit of salt-water in your nose (while leaning back)...it feels a bit like you just got pummelled by a (gentle) wave at the ocean, but it does wonders for that stuffy/dry/uckkk nose feeling.
my husband actually uses a syringe like the kind that sometimes come with children's motrin or other liquid medications.
that's my 2 cents... :)
(ps. I adore your bathroom...sigh... I hope someone says that about mine one day!)

Okay, I am delurking to tell you about the Neti pot.

CREEP-O-RIFIC!! I tried one at my moyher's insistance and it is such a weird sensation.

You have to tilt your head tot he right angle and then pour the solution from the mini teapot into your nostril. It should flow out the other one, washing it clean. It kinda tickles and be careful not to move, or you will pour the solution down your throat instead.

If you do it correctly, it does work!! Its just doesn't last terribly long. But it does work!

I use a nasapure that you can get at the drug store. it comes with packets of dry mix that you put in the bottle and then add water to make a saline type solution. It hydrates your sinus passages and allows you to "clean them out". It is really gross but a totally awesome invention. you have to do it a few times before you are good at it. Best in the shower because it can be messy. you will be amazed what is in your nose! GROSS!! I use it for allergies and when i am having sinus issues or if it is super dry. Hope you feel better soon.

Because I'm a complete dork, I just read through the comments to see how everyone else translated that. I should point out that there seems to be some disagreement on whether the possessive--the short word in front of "crayons"--is the "your" form or the "my" form. It looks to me like "vos," which means "your," but if it looks more like "mes" to you, that would mean "my." Hold it under a bright lamp and see which one it looks like to you. Okay, now I'm going to go do something productive with my life. :-P

The saline water can go down your throat when using the pot style but that is where your sinus' are draining to. It can't be doing any harm, unless you have a bad gag reflex :D

I hope you find some relief soon!

I like the sink idea and I am addicted to spray foam. As a French teacher working on my PhD, other readers have offered you the translation but I do want to caution about using Google translator and then painting it on the wall...Google translator, as most computer translation programs, makes some serious (and humorous) errors- which crack up teachers and native speakers and make it obvious what a student did. Best bet for translating? Ask someone you know that knows their stuff.

I love your blog and am working through many of the same projects on my old fixer upper.

Neti pots- that seems to have spurred quite the comments- They actually have demos of how to use it here-

So... I just read your most recent post about the Neil med sinus rinse. I have it to. And I actually love it because it always brings relief... but let me tell you (as a second grade teacher who gets them far too often) if it's a full blown sinus infection, like the rinse isn't bringing you any relief... you need antibiotics! I can always tell when it's crossed the line from sinus pain to infection and antibiotics will do the trick FAST. Hope you feel better soon!

Layla, don't be afraid to use a neti pot, it WILL help you get rid of all the nasty stuff in there. If your head isn't at the right angle it just tastes like ocean water. Dr Oz gives it thumbs up! Go for it.

perhaps if you wash the fabric a few times, or try bleaching it or aging it (tea stain) it won't be so bright :-)
