Flurniture and Fabrics

Well, I wanted to film a video of our latest junkin' excursion, but somebody with blonde hair, whose name rhymes with Kayla, forgot to charge the video camera battery the night before, so unfortunately this is all we got...

BUT,
we did have our regular camera with us, so we did manage to get a still shot of the vintage childrens schoolhouse table we got from a junk shop in Savannah...

Photobucket

Isn't it great!?

The top needs a little bit of work, but we'll have that big guy lookin' a little bit lovelier in no time!

I say "big guy" because it measures six feet long, but two and a half feet wide.
I think it's gonna make one heckuva killer coffee table in the living room!

Photobucket

We also settled on each rooms "color story" this past weekend too.

We'll be using lots of rustic reds, pale yellows, and various shades of blue and green.

I want the place to have a "farmhouse fresh/summer cottage by the sea" feel- so I think those colors (along with lots of chippy patinas, worn woods, and galvanized metals) will do just the trick!

Photobucket

Jane took me to her office the other day, and while we were there, she let me dig through her massive storage closet.
Boy oh boy did I find some great fabrics to use in the cottage!

Here's a sneak peek at a few of the palettes we're going with...

Kitchen...

(Bird-patterned fabric: Thibaut, discontinued.
Red & White Stripe fabric: Sunbrella, discontinued)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Living Room...

Photobucket

(Painting: Bellamy,
Seahorse print: Rusty Cricket
Green & White polka dot fabric: Sunbrella
Paisley Fabric: Sunbrella)

We're meeting with our handyman, Todd, today.

He's gonna help us hang stuff, build stuff, paint stuff and install stuff.

So assuming I remember to charge the video camera battery before we head over there-
I'll be back soon with more footage of our progress!

Ooh!
And I'll be back to announce the "Name the Cottage" winners soon too!

Ciao for now,

Oh yeah. Love the palettes, love the fabrics especially. Did you bring a sewing machine to create curtains, etc? If not, let me know. I have a little Singer Featherweight and can be down to Tybee in no time flat.

Layla & Kevin.
You are everything a married couple should be.
Two very special people who share their love through their gifts and talents.
Two people who love and laugh together.
Two people who share their lives with others.
Two people who can fix, revamp, create, and even shop together and produce "killer" spaces.
You are so very Blessed to be in Love in Tybee and everywhere else.
I love all your videos together.
Cheers to you Both. geri.
p.s. Can't wait to hear the name of this beautiful retreat you are creating.

I can't decide whether I like the living room colors or the bedroom colors more, but they all look great!

I am trying to get some design decisions made as well, but am having a dilemma of the "can't pull the trigger" variety: I would love some input on which flooring stain I should choose. Please stop by my blog and vote!

You guys are so cute together!!! Can hardly wait to see the finished product, love everything you've shown us so far. I hope I win the "name game." Maybe a hot tub on the porch just off the master bedroom, nice romantic getaway for a couple. I'm sure you could come up with a cute idea to "disguise" the tub so it would fit the decor better. Tybee is the most relaxing place I have ever visited. I so want to go back there.

Wow Love what you've got going! The yellow step stool in the bedroom made me gasp. My Nonnie had one just like that in her kitchen. I remember spending plenty of time perched atop that squeeeeeky chair helping her with dishes. LOVE IT!

Those colours are perfect for the kind of look you seem to be going for. I especially am in love with the green and white polka dots...my favourite pattern AND colour all in one fabric!

And I can't wait to hear on some of the name winners...here's hoping one of mine struck your fancy!

Are you going to cut the table legs shorter to make it a coffee table or is it already a short table since you said it was a kid's table? Just wondering. Hopefully you show restoring it, so we can see how it is done!

Love the concert at the end. Glad you are getting to "VACATION" while you are there too...even if that was the only 2 minutes you haven't been working!

Have fun! Can't wait to see more!

Love the old fabrics and that school house table. I have to admit I sat at something very similar in kindergarten so many years ago. Looking forward to seeing the next step.

I love the palettes y'all have put together! I can't wait to see how they come together in the actual rooms...you are such an inspiration! I especially love the yellow room...I love yellow, it is such a sunny color. There is no way to be unhappy or depressed in a (pale...haha) yellow room!

Great palettes and what fabulous fabrics! Love them all and your thoughts for the styling...it's going to look gorgeous! Now, I'd only suggest two things: have a back-up battery at the ready for the video camera (yeah, bet you wish you had one) and more mini-concerts please! Love Kevin's pickin' and playin'!!! Can't wait to see the finished rooms and see the short-list of suggested names!

Kevin and Layla,
I am living vicariously through you for 2 reasons. First and foremost I am a struggling interior designer in Atlanta and want to do exactly what you do. You do it SO well. :)

Secondly, I am in love with Tybee so watching you work your magic on The Mess Hall tickles me. My husband and I plan to retire to Tybee early and can't wait to find our own little gem to fix up!

Keep up the great work and keep making videos....just be sure to charge the battery ;)

I can't decide which part of this post I like better - your coverage (or lack thereof in the first video...) of your cottage re-do with all the photos or the video of Kevin playing 'Sweet Home Alabama' with you laughing and loving in the background.

Yes, you are blessed. :)

Anyways, can't wait to see more renovation stuff and to hear what the name is for the cottage and all of its bedrooms!

Loving the color story you have going for each of the rooms as well as the accessories.
enjoyed hearing Kevin play on the guitar and I have to tell you I have that very fabric he was sitting on whiile playing the guitar. I bought some curtains at a mill end shop on the easter shore in MD in hopes of turning them into a quilt for mother-in-law.
The cottage is going to be so lovely when you and Kevin are done. Looking forward to seeing the after pics.

Layla,
I am in LOVE with the bellamy painting! I've been looking for that kind of piece that just "speaks" to me and this one did! The colors in it are heartbreakingly perfect. I emailed her to see if she had anything similar or if she had a print. I hope, hope, hope she does because that canvas made my heart go pitter-patter. Could you post a picture of it? I saw it on the video but a picture would be ahh-mazing!

Thank you for following your dreams and for being such a wonderful, happy couple. Your joy and love of life is refreshing! - Juli

Wait! How about "(Garland Cottage/Inn"? Since there is so much history on the island, it would be a neat tie in...

In 1855, Fort Screven was ordered built on the North end of Tybee to provide a more modern system of seacoast defenses. Six poured concrete low profile gun batteries and a minefield were ordered for Tybee along with hundreds of other military buildings. Gun Batteries, such as "Battery Garland" would be named to honor America’s war heroes.

From 1897 to 1947, Fort Screven would be an integral part of America’s Coastal Defense system. Troops would train and stand guard on Tybee through the Spanish American War of 1898, World War I, and World War II. In 1947, the Fort was closed and sold to the Town of Tybee and Tourism returned as a major part of Tybee’s history.

In 1961, Battery Garland, the former gun battery and magazine for a 12 inch long-range gun, became the Tybee Island museum.
