Meet the Cottage, Name the Cottage

Photobucket
After a pit stop for groceries at Walmart (and Publix!) in Savannah, we rolled onto Tybee Island around 6:00 Monday night.

The weather was absolutely perfect, and the atmosphere was just as refreshing as I remember it being.

Photobucket

And even though we were some three hundred miles away from our Lettered Cottage, we both felt incredibly "at home".

Photobucket

Tybee has a way of making a person feel that way.
From the friendly stray "island kitties" lounging amongst the shady ferns, to the cheery colorful cottages sprinkled here and there and everywhere, to the clusters of kiddos biking their way from one side of the island to the other- you just can't help but feel comfortable here.

Photobucket

Photobucket

While the painters finish up at the Mess Hall, we're temporarily staying at a cottage called Key Lime Parrot.
It's a sunny little house, (decorated by my friend Jane) located just 2 blocks from the beach.

After we got our groceries and luggage moved into the house on Monday night, we drove over to The Crab Shack and dined bay side, under the stars.
Kevin's not a seafood guy, so we ate barbecue and "smashed taters" instead.
It was delicious!
We sipped on Corona's with lime, and talked 'til we were too tired to talk anymore.

It was a pretty long day, so we made our way back to "The Parrot" and called it a night.

Ahhhhhh.....nothin' like sleeping by the sea.

Photobucket

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday, we got to see the side of the Mess Hall we'll be working on in person, for the first time.

Here's some footage we shot of the place while we were there...

And here are a few photos we snapped too...

We've definitely got our work cut out for us, huh?

We're gonna use a lot of the "stuff" Diane has collected over the years, and our friend Mary Kay Andrews also gave us some killer leads on where to look for great "junk" yesterday too. And Jane's gonna take us shopping at all her favorite local places too- so I'm sure we'll be able to furnish those big empty rooms in no time!

Photobucket

As for the "Name the Cottage" contest I mentioned in my last post, if you'd like to submit a name, simply leave a comment on this post telling us what you think the cottage should be called.
Then, next week, Diane (who owns the cottage) will pick her top five favs out of all the names submitted.
After that, we'll post her five favorites here on our blog, so that everyone can vote for their #1 favorite name out of the five that Diane chooses.
The person who came up with the winning name will win a fabulous prize package courtesy of Mermaid Cottages!

(Note: If someone submits the same name more than once, we'll look to the earliest submission to determine who the winner is.)

Good luck and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Sassafras Tea OR
Sassafras Sea

Sassafras paid a major role in the history of Tybee. The root of the sassafras (in case you don't know) is used to make a tea that some believe has medicinal properties. What better medicine than an amazing Tybee cottage?

Here's another suggestion for the beach cottage:

MIMOSA PALMS

Yes, I am wearing out the Mimosa names.

Holly said...

How about "The Verandah" or just "Verandah" (or Veranda, depending on which spelling you like) in honor of that great screened porch. (Unless the other side has a screened porch like it. If so, you could call it Sea Breeze.)

Or, "Lanai" or "The Lanai". It seems to go better with the Mermaid brand.

Oh boy, that place is exactly the dream cottage that is in my head as the place I would love to retire in. For names:

Beach Cottage Commissariat
Glimmer of Hope Cottage
Summer Lovin' Cottage

The first one is a version of the word "commissary" which is the military place that has food and supplies for the soldiers. The other two names are just what popped into my head after looking at the pictures.

Can't wait to see the end results.

This place is great. I feel like there is no possible way to name this cottage without being there to get the feel of it but if I had to pick a name it would probably be something like The Bunkhouse. I'm all for alliteration but The Bunkhouse sticks in my head.

I have a couple of ideas for the cottage name:

Green Corn Cottage (weird I know but it pays homage to the Yuchi Indians who named Tybee and the mess hall it was.)
Brumby Cottage (a salute to the fort and it sounds like an english cosy cottage)
Cottage of the Sun (again to those Yuchi Indians whose name means children of the sun.)

Ok, I have two names. One just popped into my head when I saw the sign you will put the name on. .Mermaid's Cove.

Second, I started thinking about the song by the Beatles - Octopus' Garden - and being under the sea. Well, because you probably can't name it Octopus' Garden because of copyright laws, I thought this one would be good.
.The Merry Mermaid's Garden.

I tried to comment a minute ago and it appears my computer malfunctioned...

My husband and I put our heads together on this one! Not sure if we are allowed to suggest more than one, but here goes...

We like "The Little Light House" in honor of Tybee's lighthouse and the gorgeous natural light in the cottage.

We also like "Salt n' Light" b/c again, gorgeous natural light plus being on the coast, but also due to the verse in Matthew 5:13-14 about how we should be salt and light to others. Oh, and b/c of the meaning of the word "Tybee" to Native Americans!

Oh, and if the rooms are going to be named individually (I love that idea!), then we thought "The Wordsmith" for the master bedroom would be great due to doing the idea of doing a wall of words! :)

I love the amount of natural light and glass in that cottage, so what about:
Clarity Sands Cottage,
Delicate Sands Cottage,
or
Crystal Sands Cottage,
because as I'm sure you know, glass is made from sand...so all the windows are basically clear sand. Perfect for a cottage by the beach!
