Coastal Living Idea House 2008- Galveston, TX

Inside the front doors of the 2008 Coastal Living Idea House in Galveston, Texas, is a charming foyer. Check out the curved handrail. I love the way it instantly lets your mind know that, although stately and traditional, this house has a touch of whimsy as well. Funny how one little curve can speak such volumes. :-)

The house has a very open feel to it. The detailed trim work and abundance of windows are fabulous:

Throughout the main living areas of the house you'll find a unique blend of both traditional and modern decor.
The great room is split up into two separate sitting areas. An area rug on each side of the room defines each of the sitting areas. The identical rugs tie the spaces together, but allows them to have separate identities:

One side is more formal:

The other is more casual:

The windows across both spaces are incredible!

The Dining Room is symmetrical, sophisticated, seaside-inspired and sun-drenched.
My favorite combination.

My heart would beat faster every time I passed the driftwood mirror.
The shallow depth of the table below it is PERFECTION.

A few steps from the Dining Room is the Kitchen. It's not gigantic....

...but it does have it's own sitting area off to the side:

My favorite Bedroom in the home is the Bunkroom:

I love the pairing of the white planked walls with the dark ceiling.
The galvanized aluminum outdoor light fixtures are to die for, and I love the shutters too. I MUST have some in the Lettered Cottage!

On the opposite side of the room is an old rope ladder that leads to a "secret" space up above. The dreamer in me LOVES this idea. The designer in me sees millions of scuff marks on the beautiful white wall. :)

Here is the Bathroom off the Bunkroom. The sink is amazing, and the choice of materials and colors are so crisp and refreshing!

The Guest Bedroom is sweet and has a tranquil palette...

...and I may have to steal this shower basin idea for my own Guest Bath:

The Master Bedroom is formal, but retains a relaxed feel through its time-worn accessories.

I am CRAZY about the transom window above the door. It really keeps things in proportion. It doesn't let that big, canopy feel like the tallest thing in the room...way to go little transom!

The door that leads to the Master Bath also has a transom window above it. Isn't it spectacular?

I have definitely drawn inspiration from this gorgeous, thoughtfully decorated home...hope you have too! :-)

It is beautiful. I love the transom windows, too. So much white really says beach house. Like you, I see scuffs on the wall by the ladder.

I am noticing trends towards almost no color in homes. It looks great in pics, but I think I would get tired of it. But what am I saying? I get tired of color, too. Maybe the new neutrals is the way to go.

GORGEOUS and it's only about 45 minutes south of my house! I'd love to see it in person. The combination of new and old are great. ONE of my favorites is the sitting area off the kitchen. I could just imagine sitting there reading a book while something simmers on the stove or bakes in the oven! Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad to see the TX Coast getting some love! Do you know if this was pre or post Ike? I hope it didn't get too much damage.

That is one of the finest examples to me of why that kitchen screamed to be white.

I've recently just gone through that dilema. I wanted antique white until I realized it wasn't right for THIS house.

I'm really digging all those eclectic light fixtures!

Dana, I am personally a fan of 'no colour.' And I never tire of it. I just tried a sage green in my foyer (on a feature wall) and had to go over it the same night with chocolate. LOL It doesn't look bland if you anchor it properly with some darks and texture.

Thanks for today's smiles!

Did you see me nodding my head in full and enthusiastic agreement as I read your comments? LOL! I look at details, too, the repeating patterns in shape/color/, one form echoing another to balance, etc. Whimsical curved handrail - deeeeelightful! (But too much stuff on the halltree wall - distracting.) I got a knot of pleasure in my stomach when I saw the sheer perfect symmetry in the 2nd picture, from the columns with their amazing bases, to the center fretwork, to the perfectly centered windows across WITH the chandelier absolutely smack-dab center of both - brilliant! - to the three can lights and the two ceiling beams exactly centered overhead. Great room - wondrously executed, both sides so harmoniously balanced yet different. Great kitchen/sitting area flow. Transom height = canopy height - great thinking!

This is a great post, lots of inspiration here! I love the rustic bench in the master bedroom, that is SO ME to throw in something so rustic among the elegance of the bedding. I too would be weak in the knees with that mirror in the dining room. And...I can't get enough of the sitting room off of the kitchen! Good ideas!

Love this house & yes, I could definitely live there. I'd have to change everything in my house to achieve it, but it sure is gorgeous. I am seeing darker colors on many of the new shows lately, so am wondering which direction we are going with trends: light & airy or darker & moody
I like them both!
