Half Note Cottage: Super-sized Silverware

I'm happy to announce that Jessica is feeling like herself once again, and has completed painting the hallway, bathroom and Master Bedroom!

I picked up this oversized, wooden fork at a flea market last month for her to use on the wall in the Kitchen:

It was only $2.95! It was previously a lot lighter, so I lightly sanded it and rubbed on some stain to darken it a bit.

You can imagine how happy I was about my flea market find when I saw this "fork art" online for $175.20...

I always loved the way the giant silverware looked in Craig and Theresa Smith's shabby chic Kitchen...

On second thought, I've always loved Craig and Theresa Smith's Kitchen period!!!

Here's an oversized fork and spoon set, listed on Ebay. The winning bidder paid $167.50!

My friend Chris recently blogged about this subject as well after she scored these babies for just $3.98!

Rumor has it, sometimes her husband actually gets sucked into home accessory-inspired trances in which he visualizes exactly where Chris needs to hang things around their home. Amazingly, Chris actually captured this rare and exciting event with her digital camera this particular time:

You can read more about Chris (and her helpful hubby) here! :-)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Ooh, I love oversized silverware. Where do you live that you can go to flea markets & find such great deals? There's nothing like that where I live - in AZ (at least not that I know of).

Hey Layla,
I was just at Hobby Lobby today, and they had some oversized forks and spoons that I thought about putting in my guest house. They weren't quite as big as the ones in your picture, but definitely big! I didn't check the price, but I will let you know if I go back there. I believe they were half off. And they were black, which would match my open cabinets that my husband made. I was so excited to see your post about this...I may have to go back to Hobby Lobby and get them!
Love your blog!

I have a set myself that I adore. I got them 6 years ago at a thrift store! Ever since they're one of my favorite finds. Here's a picture of them in my dining room - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3278/2730046585_34a5dfc1ef.jpg

It's nice to see someone else has a thing for silverware on their wall. Pier 1 also has giant sized framed photos of silverware that are very cool.

This giant fork and spoon reminds me of a funny episode on "Everybody Loves Raymond".

Great find! There is an "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode where Raymond's mom and dad are fighting, and somehow (I don't remember the details) they take the giant fork and spoon of the wall and the wall is stained with their image. Funny! I love that doublewide!!! :),Kim

I think it's funny that this oversized silverware is coming back in style. I remember it being in LOTS of kitchens in the 70s. :)

I *do* love the look!

Hi Layla,
I had a giant fork & spoon in my kitchen many moons ago. I still have them packed away somewhere. Several months ago, I was actually thinking about digging them out again. I just always liked the look of them and could never part with them. I had no idea they were back again. I was also contemplating painting them white and distressing them but perhaps they should remain as they are. They are the brown wood colour. What would you do with them if you were me? Have a wonderful weekend.

Blessings,
Sandi

I SO wish we were neighbors... We would have so much fun treasure hunting and playing. Jessica is one lucky girl!!!

Just a couple of weeks ago at the S.A. I spotted a shapely cast aluminum set of fork & spoon. They were about 18" long with really nice patina. They were $2.95 each. It was almost closing time on a Saturday and I was hurrying so they could close up and go home. I got sidetracked and left without getting them. Went back first thing on Monday and they were GONE!!!! Not the first time this has happened!

Gotta slow down and if it feels impulsively "right", grab it and don't let go!!!!

Keep up the inspiration.....

Later gator!

This is killing me because my grandma had a huge set that was black hanging in her dining room - from the 60's I think!!! I am sure they are long gone....sigh...

Hey, can you tell what's in the window corners in that kitchen? The viney/leafy things. I LOVE that. Just wondering if you had an idea....
P.S. good score on the fork.

Growing up, an elderly couple down the street gave my sister's and I one of those giant forks and spoons. We used to play with them and thought they were so cool. Who would have known they would be so "in" again. Can't believe people are paying so much for them though!!

Hi, first let me introduce myself. My name is Marfa and I found your blog via another blog (can't remember which one right now) although its one of my favorites as well...lol Anyway, I wanted to tell you that you love any kind of kitchen decor that has to do with utensils. My friend's kitchen cabinet doorknobs were tiny utensils and I loved them. I also remember when I was a kid back in the early 80s my aunt had a huge spoon and fork on her Family Room wall. She had two dining sets, so one of them was in the Family Room and that's where the family always gathered for parties and such. For some reason though, I seem to remember her set being made of wicker instead of wood, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I love your blog and I have your set up as a favorite. I also receive your posts as Feed in my email everyday. So even if I don't comment often, I read you all the time. So it was about time that I actually introduced myself to you.

Hi Layla........today I went to the flea market and as soon as I saw the giant fork and spoon sitting there - I thought of you and I bought them...........for $1 each!!! I am probably going to spray paint them black and hang them in my kitchen. If you have a chance look at my blog tomorrow and if you would like to leave your opinion on what I should do with them - I would love to hear....I found lots of goodies and will post them tomorrow.

I've been a long time reader of your blog. I remember seeing this post about the giant forks and spoons back when you posted it. Ever since then, I've sort of kept an eye out for them at garage sales. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found a set at a garage sale today for $2.50! When I returned home with them, I looked up this post, again, and was delightfully surprised to see that the set that I bought is the exact set in Craig and Theresa Smith's kitchen!

Thank you so much for the creative and inspirational ideas you share daily with your readers. I can never tell you how much you have inspired me when it comes to decorating my house. You have helped me gain a better attitude about my house and helped me turn it into a warmer, inviting home for my family. Thank you!!
